Bangor girls & Scarborough boys win Class A state team titles

It was a matter of survival for the athletes competing today, as they had to deal with temperatures in the low 90's for the first time all season. There were several state meet records broken or tied, and a plethora of personal bests on the day. Just like the indoor state meet, the winning teams Bangor girls & Scarborough boys relied on their pole vaulters to provide the necessary points to claim the Class A state title.

On the girls side Bangor Rams won the outdoor state title 84-78 over Bonny Eagle. Brewer was 3rd with 60 points.

Bangor got a 1-3 finish in the 100m hurdles, with Denae Johnson running 15.06 & Grace MacLean 15.48. This was one of the best races of the day as Brunswick's Alison Hill ran 15.46 for 2nd and Synclaire Tasker of Brewer 15.52 for 4th.

In the pole vault Cony senior Lindsey Folsom repeated as champion with a state record clearance of 11-7. The win was redemption for a no height at the indoor state meet. Bangor closed out the meet with a 2-3-4 finish. Abby Reynolds jumped 10-6 for 2nd, with Ally Vanidestine 10-0 in 3rd, & Courtney Lizzotte 10-0 for 4th. Gorham's Sophia Swiatek also cleared 10-0 for 5th.

Brewer's Teal Jackson broke the 400m state record with a personal best 57.0, but it wasn't easy as she had to come from behind in the final 100m to get by Bonny Eagle's Audrey Weyand, who ran a personal best 57.75, Amanda Knight of Messalonskee also was under 60 seconds, with a 59.76. Jackson won 4 individual titles, scoring 40 points the most of any athlete. She started the meet off with a 12.45 win in the 100m, Noble's Dakotah Clement was the runner-up 12.66. Teal closed out the meet with an easy win in the 200m, clocking 25.58  as she burst off the final turn way ahead of the field. Noble's Dakotah Clement earned her second runner-up finish as she exploded in the final 60m, 26.21, just getting past Audrey Weyand of BE 26.32. Teal also won the long jump with a leap of 16-10. The Rams of Bangor scored 17 key points as Ally Vanidestine jumped 16-5 for 2nd, with Maclean 16-5 in 3rd. Senior Casey Modery was 5th 16-2.5


Lawrence's Erzsebet Nagy swept the distance races in tough conditions. Nagy controlled the 1600m from the gun as she cruised to a 5:01.07.  The Bonny Eagle duo of Kialeigh Marston 5:14.66 Sam Cox 5:16.10 went 2-3. Nagy repeated as the 800m champion, holding of a strong challenge from BE's Sam Cox, clocking 2:16.79. The senior who is headed to Middlebury stormed home for the win with a fast last lap. Cox ran a personal best of 2:18.88, her teammate Kyaunna Libby was 3rd  2:21.51, with Marston 2:23.06 in 4th as the Scots tallied 18 points.
In the 3200m, Nagy kicked home for the win and impressive triple with a time of 11:33.81. BE's Mary Szatowski who lead much of the race was second  in 11:39.66. TA's Charlotte Pierce was 3rd 11:41.65

Edward Little won the 4x100m relay 5066,with Mt Ararat 50.80 close behind.


South Portland was the surprise winner in the girls 4x800m relay as they clocked a state leading 9:49.95


Hannah Johnston of Kennebunk repeated as the high jump champion with a 5-4 clearance, Bangor's Grace Maclean was second with a 5-4 jump.


Bonny Eagle dominated the 4x400m relay with a state leading 4:05.79


Casey Modery won the triple jump with a personal best 35-3 3/4. El's Lexi Clavet was the runner-up with a seasonal best 35-2.


Biddeford's Ashley Belanger was the winner in the shot put with a seasonal best 37-0.


Kaliegh Harrison of TA won the discus 98-9, and was state runner-up in the shot 35-11


Leyna Tobey of Cony won the javelin 108-3


Laura Turner of Gorham took the 1600m race walk 8:17.79



On the boys side Scarborough won their first Class A state title as they tallied 89 points to hold off a strong challenge from Cheverus. Lewiston was 3rd with 53 points.

The Red Storm got 18 points from the pole vault as senior Kevin Manning won his 2nd straight title clearing 13-0. His teammate Alec James also cleared 13-0 good for the runner-up spot

Senior Ryan Jamison was a double winner as he took the 100m in 11.18 to easily handle a strong field. Alex Nichols of Brunswick 11.32 held off last year's champion Alex Shain 11.33 for 2nd. In the 200m, Jamison exploded of the turn as he ran the only dub 23 clocking off the meet with his 22.89. Hassen Mohamed of Lewiston was the runner-up from the previous section as he ran 23.11.



Senior Robert Hall of Scarborough ran a smart race to pull away from the field at the 900m mark as he cruised to his first individual state title in the 1600m. Hall's time was an outdoor personal best of 4:25.83. Justin Tracy of Mt Blue was the runner-up 4:29.05.



The 400m was one of the most hyped races coming into the meet, and it didn't disappoint as Alex Nichols of Brunswick equalled the state meet record of the great Chris Downe as he ran a personal best and state leading 48.58. James Ociti of Biddeford ran 49.17 for 2nd place, while James Campbell  of Cheverus was 3rd in 49.97.

 


The emerging star of the meet was Isiash Harris of Lewiston who ran a scintilizating 1:54 split in the 4x800 to help the Blue Devils to a runner-up finish. Harris would come back to break the state meet record with a personal best 1:54.17. The old record of 1:54.54 was held by former EL standout Ben Fletcher set in 1998
 
Deering's Jared Bell broke the state meet record in the discus with a toss of 176-7, the old record was 173-10 held by Dam Smith of TA back in 2009.  Bell added a state leading toss of 57-2 1/4 to win the shot put.

Freshman Spencer Dunn of Edward Little took the 1600m race walk in 7:19.40. holding off a strong close from Mt Blue's Zach Veayo 7:21.55

Andrew Toothaker of Hampden Academy took the 300m hurdles with a sub 40 clocking of 39.79. The Yeboah twins of Cheverus went 2-3 with Elijah 40.20 in 2nd and Isaac 40.27 in 3rd.

Julian Nijkamp of Gorham won the 110m hurdle title in 15.01. Justin Gagnon of Biddeford 15.23 was the runner-up

Connor Harris of Edward Little won his second triple jump championship with a huge leap 44-10.25.  He needed that huge effort to hold off a strong challenge from BE senior Tyson Goodale 44-3.5. Alex Shain of Sanford 43-8 1/4 was 3rd. Harris would add another win in the high jump as he was the only one in the field to clear 6-2. Bonny Eagle senior Jon Thomas cleared 6-0 with fewer missing than the field to finish as runner-up.

Cheverus scored 30 points in the relays as the won all three. They got a dominating state leading 8:06.24 win to open the meet. They then took the 4x100m relay with sub 44 clocking, of 43.98.  They closed the meet out with a state leading 3:26.73

Jeremy Bissell of Brewer won the long jump title on his home runway with a impressive jump of 21-8 1/2. Connor Harris of EL jumped a personal best 21-0 1/2 to edge out Sanford's Alex Shain 21-0 1/4 for the runner-up spot.

Jake Doolan of Lawrence won the javelin with a toss of 173-8, Noble's Adam Della-Pina had a personal best of 171-11 for the runner-up. Last year's champion Matt Cushing of Cheverus was 3rd 170-6
