HS Bloggers: Heather Evans Blog #3

Follow York senior Heather Evans as she blogs about her indoor track season. Evans is a distance runner who runs the 800-2mile. She has personal best of 5:24.62 in the mile, 2:33.47 in the 800 & 12:10.54 for 2 miles. A year ago Heather placed 7th in the mile at the Class B state meet.

The indoor track season is in full swing! Times are speeding up, competition is brewing, and post-season meets are approaching quickly. Everyone is starting to set individual and team goals for their conference meets, states meets, and beyond! But as the season progresses, the constant struggle with Maine winters does not subside. Lucky for my team, this past week was warm enough to melt most of the snow off of our track, so with the help of some dedicated coaches and their shovels, we were able to get in some quality track time! But the recent snowfall will impede our ability to use it again anytime soon...

This past friday was the first meet in which I was pleased with my results, perhaps that was the outcome of some much needed track speed! In the past couple of meets I’ve been tripling up, doing the 4x800, the mile and the 2mile. We are still playing around with our 4x800 team since this is the first year since I was a freshmen that we have had an abundance of distance/middle distance runners, but we landed a solid 2nd place and a sub-11 time! In the mile I dropped 12 seconds from the previous week and came 2nd with a 5:31, and in the 2 mile I won, and broke my school record, with an 11:57! To put the icing on the cake, our team won for the third week in a row! I am so excited that York girls are on the come back trail; look out Western Maine!

As I assume it is for all Maine high schoolers, this coming week is the ever dreaded midterms. From the moment I awoke saturday morning to the moment I fell asleep Monday night–slight exaggeration–I was flooding my brain with information. From ecology, to DNA replication, to exponential functions, to projectile objects, I am completely studied out. Midday Sunday, I was driving myself crazy and just itching to get out of my house...

So, to loosen up the legs, escape the snow, and take a break from the books, Sydney Ambrose (of Freeport) and I hit the indoor cycle studio! For those of you who live in the Portland area, you may have seen Quest Cycle on Marginal Way in Portland, maybe you even know some people who take classes there! Our family opened this studio last March with the goal of providing high energy group cycle classes. Cycling is an amazing way to cross train in the winters, and never fails to make you sweat. After getting my butt kicked in cycle, I took a Yoga for Athletes class–in order to stretch out and relax–down at Quest Fitness in Kennebunk. After the much needed relaxation, I was ready to study a little more, but not so much that I would miss the season premier of Sherlock Holmes that streamed Sunday night! If you watch this show, then no explanation is necessary; if you don’t watch it, then you must start. But don’t let it prevent you from studying!

I hope you all study hard, run fast, and dedicate at least 10-15 minutes of your day to relaxing. How you do it is entirely up to you, whether you do some yoga, take a nap, or watch an episode of Sherlock... relax and run happy!
