Thornton Academy girls & Cheverus boys best in the SMAA

The Thornton Academy jumpers did their job, scoring 44 points in the long & triple jump as they scored 4 in each event. In the long jump indoor state champion Tori Daigle jumped a seasonal best & smaa championship record of 18-0, teammate Alexandria Pettaway jumped 16-8 for second place. In the triple jump Pettaway took the title with a jump of 34-2, with Brayden Costa 33-1 1/4 finishing second for the Trojans. Daigle was also victorious in the 100m hurdles as she won a close race over South Portland freshman Callie O'brien 16.28 to 16.32, for her record breaking effort in the long jump Daigle was selected as the field event performer of the meet.

McAuley thrower Olivia Smith had a big day as she had the state leading throw in the javelin 116-3 to win the event, she added another victory in the discus with a heave of 121-2, good enough to beat the field by 26 ft, Smith is also the state leader in the event. Smith just missed a third win in the shot put where she finished 3/4 of inch behind winner Lonnie Staten of Windham. Olivia was presented with the most valuable field event performer of the regular season award.

The South Portland girls 4x800 didn't let late afternoon prom plans get in the way of setting a state leading 10:03.91 in the meets first event on the track. In the girls 4x100 Marshwood had flawless passes en route to a 51.60 clocking which ranks them #2 in Class A.

In the 300m hurdles Callie O'Brien showed good form over the hurdles, as she had a huge personal of 48.34 to secure the win, her time moves her to Class A #2.

Kyaunna Libby of Bonny Eagle took the 800m victory in 2:26.98, her time is Class A #3. Kiera Murray of Cheverus added Class A #2 performance in the 3200m as she cruised to a win with a 11:32.59.

Audrey Weyand was a double winner taking the 400m in 59.27, Weyand is the current Class A leader, she came back to add another win in the 200m (27.07). She was voted as the most valuable track athlete of the meet.

South Portland's Shannon Conley was presented the most valuable award for the regular season, and Conley backed it up with a leg on the state leading 4x800 & then a 5:18.41 win in the 1600m.

 

The Cheverus Stags showed today they are the favorite to win next week's Class A state title as they won 8 events en route to 36 point victory. The Stags were paced by a double hurdle win from Isaac Yeboah, & thrower Nick White sweep of the shot put & discus, plus two state leading times in the 4x100 & 4x400m relays.

Isaac Yeboah who was presented with the boys regular season performer of the season award, showed why he was selected with his convincing 15.18 win in the 110m hurdles, a mark that equlas the state lead and is best in Class A. In the 300m hurdles Yeboah lowered his own state leading time to 39.44 as he one again dominated. He was also a member of both winning relays teams, and was voted by the coaches as the track mvp of the meet.

In the throws junior Nick White has a career day in the shot put as he upset Class A leader Mike Pino. White had several throws out over 51ft on the day, his winning effort was a 52-1 bomb on his last attemp, that mark puts White #1 in Class A. In the discus White continued his success with a personal best 158-7 in the discus to win the event by over 18ft, that mark improved his state leading mark by over 5ft. Like his teammate Yeboah, White was presented the regular season field performer of the season award and also was selected as the field mvp of the meet.

Cheverus also picked up a win from Jake Dixon in the 200m (22.62). Dixon combined with Isaac & Elijiah Yeboah, & luke Trickey to run a state leading 44.12 in the 4x100, then in the 4x400 the Yeboahs & James Hannigan clocked 3:28.20 for the win and state leading time.

In the javelin, Tim Jerome who has had a shoulder injury most of the season took one throw, and the 166-7 throw was good enough for the win & Class A state lead.

Deering Hany Ramadan had a strong meet winning the 400m (50.42) Class A & state #3 time, then ran state #4 in the 200m 22.76 in a runner-up finish.

Scarborough won the 4x800 in a state leading 8:21.63

Bonny Eagle's Jon Woods was a surprise winner in the long jump as he jumped 20-11 3/4 for the win, the mark vaults him to Class A #1

South Portland's Michael Cuesta won the triple jump with a leap of 44-0 3/4, which improves on his Class A leading mark. Freshman Ruay Bol was the runner-up with a big mark of 42-7 3/4, which is Class A #2 and state #5. Bol also added a 6-2 clearance to win the high jump.
