Scouting Reports Merriconeag Boys

As part of our xc coverage we are taking an in-depth look at some of the top teams around the state by doing a team scouting report.

Merriconeag Waldorf is a small school and with a small school comes limited number of athletes, however that hasn't stopped them from having some success on the xc trails. While the Merriconeag girls program has had plenty of success including state championship in 2011 & 2012 the boys program is just starting to come into the spotlight. A year ago the boys finished as the Western Maine Regional runner-ups which which matched he most successful finish in school history, the 2009 squad were runners-up as well. This year they will be shooting for their first State & WM regional titles.

Coach Lake-Adams says "Everyone has worked hard over the summer. This year's team is looking stronger than last season, with the addition of several fast freshmen and returning runners who are looking to improve their times." From last year's squad the boys only lost one runner to graduation so they have 6 of their top 7 back which bodes well.

"Our tentative top five is composed of Zach Neveu, Tucker Pierce, Dylan Wu, Nick Neveu and Lars Gundersen." Said Coach Lake-Adams. Last year the team was led by freshman Tucker Pierce who ran to a 4th place finish in the WM Regional, he was followed by junior Zachary Neveu who was 8th, another freshman Dylan Wu finished 12th. This is a talented squad that is the favorite to win the Class C title based on returning 5k times from a year ago, and if they do so they will make school history.

Coach Lake Adams Says...

The Merriconeag boys' team did fairly well last season- we were runners-up at the Western Maine Class C Regional, which is the most successful team finish in the school's (short) history. However, we do still have a very small team (only ten individuals, close to half the eligible boys in the entire school), and last year's state meet made clear how challenged we can be by the sudden onset of illness. This challenge of such a small school community is also a strength-we have several sibling pairs (five sibling sets between the girls and boys teams) and our team is very close, which is definitely a training benefit.
