Yahye Hussein of Deering and Anna Slager of Gorham ran themselves to victory today at Westbrook High as Gorham, Deering, Noble, and Westbrook battled it out on a deceivingly difficult course.

The boys race featured 4 boys separated by 9 seconds in the final results with Hussein  (16:28) getting the better of Gorham’s Jesse Southard (16:30), teammate Iid Sheikh-Yusef, and Gorham’s Ben Foster. That group acted as each other’s shadow for the entirety of the race with nobody getting any space at any point in time. Hussein led early with Southard, Zackaria, and Foster going with him as they crossed the first mile around 5:20. Hussein held of several surges from the Gorham duo, and eventually out sprinted the field in the final stretch to take home the win. The Blazes then took places 6-8 with Saad Zackaria leading the way, but it was not enough as Gorham took the victory in 37-42. Deering was 3rd with 45 points with the final points coming down to each teams 5th man. Look for these teams to be in the mix later on in the season at the Regional meet.

The girls race was led and won by Anna Slager from the gun. Slager took the pace out at a solid 6:20 first mile, ten seconds ahead of Gabbi Pabst and Halee Phelps of Westbrook . The impressive freshman ended up with a 6 second victory  (20:10) over Gabbi Pabst  (20:16) who was second, and Halee Phelps (20:17) who was third. The Blazes put 6 girls in the top 8 which helped pace them to a strong win over Deering 23-60. Gorham was third with 62 and Noble 4th with 78. It is worth noting that Freshman Lucy Tumavicus placed 4th for Deering and Gorham was without their other freshman star Bridget Rossignol for the day.
