On a cool and windy day in Bucksport, the boys Small School and overall PVC champion of 2014 was sophomore John Hassett of George Stevens Academy. Hassett set the tone early, separating himself from the pack early and going on to win big. Hassett was the only runner of the day to break the 18-minute barrier, crossing the line with a time of 17:15.07. Behind him was the large schools champion, senior Josh Zapsky (18:01.06) of Hermon High School. Zapsky had a strong final mile to pull away from the small school’s runner up Tristian Butterfield (18:22.82) of Orono High School. Butterfield held on to beat his teammate freshman Matt Keresey (18:24.31) down the final stretch. Ralph Magnani (18:31.60) of MDI was the large school’s runner up. Presque Isle’s Jason Bartley (18:33.22) rounded out the top 3 for the large school competitors.

For the team standings, Orono High School was victorious in the small school division, with all of their top 5 runners finishing in the top 10, led by Butterfield’s 2nd place finish. As for the Large School division, Caribou High School pulled off the upset over favored Mt. Desert Island. Led by the junior duo of Chathu Karunasiri (18:38.33) and Elijah Verhoff (18:42.76) who finished 4th and 5th respectively, Caribou’s 2nd pack came through in 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th.

Caribou had another strong showing in the JV Boys race, which was won by Caribou’s Tsion MacLeod (19:37.80) and was followed by teammate and runner up Gabe Massey (19:51.72). Caribou’s JV squad smoked the field, beating MDI by 54.

Your large school division and overall PVC champ of 2014 was senior Caroline Driscoll of MDI. Her time of 19:54.51 was just enough to hold off the heavily favored small school division champ Hannah Steelman (19:58.75) of Orono High School, who was right on Driscoll’s heels nearly the whole race. Driscoll and Steelman were the only girls to break the 20-minute barrier in the race. Tia Tardy (20:25.65) of Mattanawcook High School was the small school division runner up, just holding off large school division runner up Haley Lawrence (20:26.06) of Ellsworth High School down the homestretch. Driscoll’s teammate Waylon Henggeler (20:38.99) rounded out the top 3 for the large school division and Kassidy Dill (20:47.65) of Orono was 3rd in the small school division.

The PVC large school division team champion was MDI, using a strong pack-racing tactic, finishing 4th, 5th and 6th behind Driscoll and Henggeler’s performances. As for the small school division, Orono High School was victorious, behind Steelman’s 1st place finish and Dill’s 3rd place performance. They also took 4th, 6th and 7th places. George Stevens Academy was the runner up.

In the JV girl’s race, George Steven’s Academy saw their top 2 girls take 1st and 2nd place. Sophomore Hanna Jordan (23:31.45) got the win and was followed by teammate Cedar Slagle (23:34.27). Caribou girls were victorious, however, led by freshman Sarae Greenier (24:09.71).
