Opening Day 2014: SMAA opens with a flurry of strong performances 

The SMAA 2014-15 season got underway on Saturday at USM.

Meet 1 Deering, Massabesic, Noble & South Portland.

Daniel Guilani of South Portland the reigning outdoor Class A champion with his new spin technique opened his indoor campaign with a new state leading 53-9 1/4. His teammate Michael Cuesta the 2014 indoor triple jump state champion showed late season form as he broke his own SMAA league record 43-4.

On the track Deering's Hany Ramadan ran an impressive 51.75 to win the 400m, then came back with an even faster 23.33 in the 200m, the mark was a indoor personal best only bested by 2 others in Class A a year ago.

On the girls side freshman Caitlin Lally of Deering open her career with a flying 63.79 in the junior 400m, her mark ended up being the second fastest on the day.

In the shot put Maddie Stella of Noble had a 34-6 bomb to win and set the top mark in the state. Stella who didn't throw indoors a year ago improved on her 31-5 1/2 outdoor best from last spring.

Meet 2 Biddeford, McAuley, Windham & Portland

Defending Class A high jump champion Alexis Wintle of Windham showed she's going to be tough to beat this winter as she matched her winning height from a year ago with her 5-2 clearance.

In the boys 55m hurdles Justin Gagnon of Biddeford opened with a fast 8.09 & also added  two more wins with a 41-0 effort in the triple jump & 19-9 1/2 leap in the long jump.

Kyle Broughton of Kennebunk had a strong meet in the jumps clearing 5-10 in the high jump & 12-0 in the pole vault

Meet 3 Gorham,Westbrook, Bonny Eagle, Scarborough

In the race of the day freshman Anna Slager used a strong last lap kick to win the Mile in 5:27.26 as she held off Class A XC champion Halee Phelps of Westbrook (5:28.99) & Laura Volan of Scarborough (5:29.18).

Sarah Rinaldi paced the Red Storm picking up wins in the 55m hurdles (9.66), Sr high jump (5-0), & Sr triple jump (32-8). The triple jump mark was the best on the day.

Bonny Eagle's Kialeigh Marston ran the fastest 400m on the day as she clocked 63.73 for the easy win.

Westbrook's Gabbi Pabst set the top 2 mile in the state as she held off a strong challenge from Laura Volan to win 12:13.24 to 12:14.97

Maurice Johnson of Westbrook had a strong day in the sprints as he won the Sr. 55m in a personal best of 6.90, he then added a win in the Sr. 200m with a 24.40.

In the 2 mile defending Class A state champion Jacob Terry of Scarborough showed he's in shape to run fast this winter as he opened with a sub 10 effort of 9:55.35.

Sophomore Sam Rusak won an entertaining pole vault competition that saw the top 3 all over 12-0. Rusak would best Sanford's Peter Heggarty (12-6) & teammate Edward James (12-0) with his personal best 13-6 clearance.

The 800m race was very strong as Scarborough's Colin Jones & Colin Tardiff battled over the 4 laps. In the end Jones showed great strength to pull away to win the state leading time of 2:02.32, Tardiff was a few strides behind in a strong 2:04.05

Sanford's Peyton Wiegand had a strong day in the jump pit as he set a state leading mark in long (20-2 1/2) & added a 40-0 1/2 effort in the triple.

Meet 4  Cheverus, Marshwood, TA

Thornton Academy's Tori Daigle wasted little time in putting her name in the record books as she leaped 17-5 on her first attempt to smash Maria Curit's (16-9 1/2) set in 2011. Daigle would also add wins in the Sr. Hurdles (9.35) & Sr 200m (28.14)

TA got a state leading performance from Alexandra Pettaway in the 55m as she crossed the line in 7.67 for the win. She added a second win in the triple jump with a 32-6 1/4 effort.

Georgia Caso of Cheverus won the 800m in 2:33.50 the fastest time on the day giving her the state lead.

The 55m race on the boys side was full of speed, and TA's Derek Boissonnault showed the most with his speedy 6.74 effort as he led 3 others under 7 seconds.

Jake Dixon of Cheverus opened his season with a 51.51 clocking in the 400m, the mark was the fastest on the day.

Cheverus jumper Jacob Schott had a great day as well as he picked up a win in the triple jump 41-7 3/4 plus added a strong 19-9 effort in the long jump for second.
