State Champion spotlight: Nicolas Boutin Old Town

Old Town senior Nicolas Boutin took home Class B state titles in the 55m (6.73) and the 200m (23.51) as he was the top sprinter in the meet. For good measure he helped his 4x200m relay squad to another top of the podium finish as they bested the field in 1:36.85. We caught up with Nicolas to ask him a few questions about his preparation before the meet, his mindset on race day, and what it meant to lead his team to the runner-up trophy

What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?

Leading up to the state meet I just made sure I was healthy and injury free. I'd had some nagging little problems in the past weeks like shin splints and a knee problem, so I just wanted to make sure those were gone and that I was feeling fit for the meet.

How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?

I try not to get to pressure myself too much at meets, states especially, or I'll usually get nervous and then my running becomes choppy. To relax I usually just listen to some music and keep moving around, watch the other events and cheer on teammates.

How did you feel after the 4x200m knowing you had won 2 individual titles, a relay title, to help lead the team to a state runner-up trophy?

It felt pretty amazing moving up two spots to win the 4x200m, we were all (the relay team) very excited about that. I was very pleased with my two individual titles, my times weren't what I wanted them to be but that just gives me more motivation to work harder for outdoor. Winning the runner-up was really special to me, it was a great way to top off senior year of indoor track.

Coming into the season what were your goals and did you achieve them?

My goals this season were to run personal bests in all my events and win at least one indoor state title, which I've never done before. I didn't manage to run my best in any of my races, but I got the state titles which makes me happy.

How do you think winning two individual state title will effect you heading into outdoors?

Winning the titles makes me more motivated for my outdoor season, because I won the titles but I wasn't the fastest time in the state which is my ultimate goal. Also I want to defend my outdoor titles from last year, so I've got a lot of work to do in the upcoming months to achieve that.
