KVAC Class B: Waterville girls win again, Belfast boys on top
The Waterville girls track dynasty is alive and well as the Panthers easily outscored runner-up Belfast 168.50 to 89.50 to win the Class B KVAC conference title.
Senior Sarah Shoulta led a 1-2 finish in the 100m hurdles for the Panthers as she clocked 16.57 with teammate Kellie Bolduc right behind in 16.75. Shoulta added a second hurdle win with a Class B leading 47.31. Sarah wasn’t done though as she added 10 more points with another Class B leader with her 10-0 clearance in the pole vault. She closed out her day running a leg on the second place 4x400m relay.
Waterville did well in the distance events as junior Lauren Brown took the 1600m in a Class B leading 5:25.33, despite the warm temperatures she was able to double back adding another victory in the 3200m as she stopped the clock in a personal best & Class B leading 11:35.20. Teammate Cecilia Morin was the runner-up in the 3200m and earned a fourth place finish in the 1600m.
Senior jumper/hurdler Kellie Bolduc helped the cause with a win in the triple jump 33-7 1/2, plus a runner-up finish in the high jump (4-10) & 100m hurdles (16.75) & 4x400m relay.
MCI’s Katie Hughes was the top thrower in the meet as she won the discus with a 110-9 effort, that mark ranks her Class #2 heading into the state meet. Hughes added another win in the shot put with best effort of 33-4 1/2
In the sprints Cassidy Hill of Belfast won the 400m in a Class B leading time of 59.85, she doubled back to take the 200m with her 27.74 winning effort. Hill also ran key legs on the winning 4x100m relay (52.32) which is the fastest time in Class B, and the 4x400m (4:20.59)
Class B javelin leader Brynne Wrona took her event with a heave of 108-5.
The Belfast boys used quality and depth to win the KVAC Class B title by 70 points over Waterville.
The Lions were led by junior Drew Nealey who bested the filed in the 110m hurdles with his winning effort of 16.18. Nealey added another win his his speciality the pole vault with his 13-0 clearance, and scored 10 more points with his 3rd win of the day in the triple jump as he leaped out to 41-6 1/4
Belfast also got wins from Roger Quehl in the 800m as he stopped the clock at 2:03.96. Quehl also ran a leg on the victorious 4x400m relay (3:39.38), plus helped the 4x100 & 4x800 squads to runner-up finishes
In the high jump senior Owen Falvey won the event with a 5-10 clearance.
Oceanside’s Preston Spear was the top sprinter as he took the 100m (11.66), he doubled back to take the 200m with a 23.35 performance. Teammate henry Barry clocked Class B #2 performance in the 300m hurdles with his 41.56.
In the distance events senior Chris Cote ran 4:33.35 to win the 1600m, then in one of the closest races of the day ran a Class B leading 9:47.0 in the 3200m winning by just .2 over Harrison Knowlton of Leavitt.
In the 1600m race walk Samuel Brenner clocked a Class B leading 7:03.63 holding off Class B #2 Billy Chambers of Waterville
Leavitt’s Billy Bedard won the long jump with a personal best 21-3 1/2 leap, that mark ranks him Class B #2.
Winslow’s Justin Martin threw a Class B leading 170-3 1/2 to win the javelin. While in the shot put MCI’s Curtis McLeod upset top seed Trever Gray of Waterville with his 51-11 winning throw. Gray would get his revenge by winning the discus with a 150-8 effort
