Boys Recap

Osman Doorow of Lewiston once again ran unchallenged, the junior crushed the course record at Cony running 16:38 erasing the year old record of last year's champion Aaron WIllingham by 18 seconds. Runner-up Paul Casavant of Hampden Academy was also under the old course record with his 16:55.40 effort.

Doorow attacked the difficult course & the rest of the field couldn't match his pace. Osman knew Paul Casavant of Hampden Academy was behind him, but "I looked back and he was gone." Doorow said. This was just after the mile.

Th rest of the way despite having a big lead the senior from Lewiston who won the Festival of Champions two weeks before, kept the accelerator to the floor and continued to extend his lead.

As he crested the hill coming out of the woods for the final time, the crowd was impressed with his lead. Osman pushed to the finish, and crossed the line in 16:38.1, the mark shattered the course record 16:56.

Can anyone stop Doorow in Class A? It doesn't appear to be in the cards right now.

"My goal is to win the Class A title & run under 16 minutes at Twin Brook." Doorow told MaineTrackXC post race.

Hampden Academy's Paul Casavant showed his fitness is at a high level as he finished second.

Casavant was a little worried about the fast early pace. "The pace went out fast the first mile with Osman, Jacob & Zach, We were around 5 flat which is fast for this course."

He was able to hold just fine as he ran under 17 minutes, and was also under the old course record with his 16:55.4

"I just want to stay with Osman, he's the one to beat." Casavant said about his upcoming regional & state races.

Messalonskee's Zach Hoyle who ran 4th for much of the race was able to kick his way past Jacob Gamache of Edward Little over the last 800m to take 3rd place.

Freshman Wyatt Lord gave Hampden Academy another low stick with his 5th place effort (17:41.1).

Right behind Lord was another freshman, Nick Dall who was able to get by Chris Walfield of Morse in the last mile to win the Class B title. Dall's winning effort was 17:46.10 to Walfield's 17:49.70.

Hampden Academy behind 3 in top 8 cruised to the Class A team title with 77 points, Bangor at 102 was second followed by Lewiston 110 & Mt Blue 131.

In Class B it was the Waterville Panthers winning for the first time in over 30 years according to Coach Rob Stanton. Waterville scored 55 points to finish 35 points in front of Befast, Lincoln Academy was 3rd with 103.

Girls

In the girls race senior Lauren Brown of Waterville dominated the race winning by 31 seconds, her 19:52.40, the third fastest time in course history. Cony's Anne Guadalupi was the runner-up, and was the fastest from Class A with her 20:23.2, faster than here winning effort from a year ago.

Brown spoke about her strategy "I didn't know what kind of race the others were going to have, but I planned to go out and push hard up the hills."

Brown followed that strategy to a tee, as she led early on with Cony freshman Talia Jorgensen on her heels then it was Guadalupi, Tessa Cassidy & Katherine Leckbee following a few strides back.

Shortly after the mile Brown had opened up a 7 second lead over the chase pack of Leckbee, Cassidy & Gaudalupi

Running alone didn't slow Brown down though. "When I felt myself slowing down, I just pretended their was a girl in front me of me that I was chasing."

Lauren didn't let of the gas pedal during the second mile, and as she emerged from the woods well in control. Brown pushed all the way to the line finishing in 19:52.40, the third fastest performer in course history at KVAC championship. Her sister & Erzsebet Nagy are the only ones to run faster.

This was the third time in her career that Brown ran under 20 minutes, could a sub 19 be coming at Belfast next week?

Guadalupi who dealt with a knee issue all week long ran 3 seconds faster than her winning effort a year ago for second place. She repeated as the Class A champion today, and will be one of the favorites in Class A the rest of the season.

Mt Ararat's Katherine Leckbee was next across the line just 5 seconds back of Gauadalupi. Leckbee showed she will be one to watch over the next couple of weeks.

Coming in next was Tessa Cassidy of Brunswick with a time of 20:52, she was followed by the Class B runner-up Cecilia Morin of Waterville in 20:58.

In the Class A team race, Mt Blue pulled a slight upset over Brunswick as the Cougars won by a single point 71-72, while Cony was third with 84 points. The Cougars averaged 22:34 for 5k, with a pack time of 2:40. Brunswick has the faster average time with a 22:24, but their pack time was larger, 3:06. Expect these same teams to battle it out again at the A regional in Belfast next week.

In Class B Waterville cruised to the team title with just 52 points, they were 23 points better than runner-up Maranacook. The Panthers behind the 1-2 finish of Brown & Morin had 3 in the top 10 en route to their first championship in 10 years. Morse was third with 82 points.
