The Orono Red Riots will look to make it three-in-a-row this weekend as they come into the meet unchallenged and undefeated in the regular season, save for a second place showing to nationally ranked LaSalle at the Festival of Champions. Their trio of Tia Tardy, Kassidy Dill and Hannah Steelman have finished 1-2-3 in all regular season meets with Tardy as its surefire front runner. Last week they won yet another Northern Maine title going 1-2-3-6-7 and have seen improvement from Camille Kohthala and Olivia Fandell over the course of the season which makes their top five even more dangerous. Orono hasn't run at Twinbrook since Steelman and Dill's freshmen year, which could be disadvantageous against some of the southern Maine teams who have competed there multiple times. However with their top three and their improving four and five runners, look for Orono to win the Class C championship going away.

The battle for second place should be an intriguing story-line to watch on Saturday. George Steven's Academy placed a strong second to Orono at the Northern Regional in Belfast last week on the strength top five finishes from Eliza Broughton and Zeya Lorio. In total, they placed five in the top 15 overall to score 36 points which has to be the lowest second place score of all time for a Regional qualifier. Anything can happen at the state meet, and if a couple Orono girls happen to falter, GSA could perhaps score an upset on Saturday. Also looking for top three finishes are Wayneflete and Maine Coast Waldorf from Southern Maine. Wayneflete fended off Maine Coast Waldorf 69-77 to win Southern C Regional last weekend as they placed three in the top ten overall. The Boothbay girls are another team that will be running for a top three finish this weekend.

It's convenient that the best team in the state also has the best three runners in Class C. As mentioned before, Tardy, Dill and Steelman have finished 1-2-3 in all regular season meets but Tardy has slowly separated herself from her two teammates. The mid-distance specialist has shown fascinating range this season and ran 18:33 at Belfast last weekend which was the fastest time of all Northern Maine runners. Tardy hasn't run at Twinbrook's since her freshmen year but her credentials this season make her the overwhelming favorite to win on Saturday. If the conditions are decent look for Tardy to try and make a run at a sub-19 showing. Look for Dill and Steelman to try and work together for a 1-2-3 finish for Orono on Saturday. It should be noted that Steelman is the defending state champion, and if all goes well could challenge Tardy for the win on Saturday. They both have made tremendous leaps in their fitness this season and have progressively gotten faster with each race. Last week Steelman placed second at Belfast running 19:09 with Dill 36 seconds back in 19:45. Dill is dealing with a small injury which may explain her drop from the pack last week. There will be a handful of runners trying to break up the Orono trio this weekend. Faith Blethen of Boothbay is one runner who could certainly break up the trio. The freshman won the Western C regional running 20:20.23, finishing over 25 seconds ahead of Ella Brown of St. Dom's. Having already run at Twinbrook's the season, her familiarty of the course could certainly pay dividends come race day. George Steven's duo of Eliza Broughton and Zeya Lorio were not too far behind Kassidy Dill last weekend at the Northern Regional. They placed fourth and fifth respectively. They will be looking to keep pace with the Orono trio as they hope to score the upset. Other runners to watch are Brown of St. Dom's and Fiona Ahearne of Maine Coast Waldorf.
