Comparing the results from the East and West, it looks like the west will dominate the State meet, and leading the way is Luke Laveridere of Yarmouth. He won regionals in a stellar 16:32, but it wasn't as easy as his other wins. Laverdiere was pushed all the way by Ryan Morrison, Chandler Vincent, and Henry Jaques. He won by only 3 seconds. He hasn't had a finish that close since last year when he was a freshman. Laverdiere will expect a similar race. Morrison has closed that gap down on him by a lot in the course of a month. When he first went up against the Sophomore he was 35 seconds behind him at Manchester. He was 16:35 this past week. He's got the upper hand of having Twin Brook as his home course and he's defiantly put in a lot of time running on it. Look for him to be with Laverdiere again and possible pull an upset and win the State title. Two other gents that ran with Laverdiere Is Chandler Vincent and Henry Jaques of Freeport. All the season the two have been a powerful 1, 2, for the their team and they've proven that again last weekend. Jaques has been closing in on Chandler all season as he's closed the gap more and more down to now, 3 seconds as he was 16:38. Watch as these four gents be the front runners of the race again. Also from Freeport, who cracked into the top 10 is Eric Brobst, who ran a 17:08 last weekend to finish 6th. Brobst has been consistently in the mid-low 17's this year and ran his seasonal best this past week. Brobst was a key component to Freeport's victory. He'll look to be in the top 10 again. Morrison's teammate, Kyle Hansen made it into the top 5 with a 16:59, almost a new PR. Like Morrison, Hansen knows the course like the back of his hand. He knows every twig and rock and where to pick it up and settle in He'll try to be top 5 again. Coming out of the northern regional is the champ, Nick Dall from Waterville. Dall, the freshman, had a smart race as he laid back till the last mile and made his move away from the pack into the finish with a 16:42. Dall will do his best to run with the chase pack keep an eye on him. Caleb Love-Webb from Camden Hills is bouncing back from an injury and is feeling real good. He ran with Dall for the first two miles at Belfast and crossed the line 2nd with a 16:54, a new PR. As long as he still feels strong, he could potentially run with Dall again and maybe this time, all the way to the finish. Caribou's stud, and PVC Large School champ, Chathu Karunasiri will make a run for the top 10. He was 3rd in the northern regional as he trotted to a 17:05. It'll be a new course for him as he's never raced at Twin Brook before. As long as runs smart and doesn't destroy the first mile or two like many people, he should be in the top 10 again.
Freeport had some bad luck this year with injuries, but as soon as they got their top 7 back together, they've been dominate. They barely won WMC over York and Greely, and last week they just walked over both, placing their top 3 in the top 10. Plus their #4 runner finishing 15th and #5 in 31st to help them score a total of 59 points. They're looking to make another big run as they're all at 100% and ready to defend their state title. York had a strong pack time again of only 56 seconds last week but an average of 17:41. Greely had the better average of 17:33 but still lost to York by 1 point, 78-79. If they want to beat them they need their #4 and #5 runners to be closer to York's #4 and #5. Their split was close to 2 minutes with a 1:50. If they can close that from the back, they'll be able to get the runner up spot. If Caribou has a strong day, they'll be in the mix as well for runner up and could mix things up. They averaged 17:23 at Belfast with a 31 second split. They were able to fit their top 5 in the top 10 with their #6 runner just outside of the top 10. Keep them in mind when you watch Saturday.
