PVC Small School Meet Preview


The 2016 PVC Small School Championship Meet will be held this Saturday May 28th at Foxcroft Academy starting at 11:00am. The weather forecast is 87 degrees with a 20% chance of showers.

17 schools will be competing: Bangor Christian, Bucksport, Calais, Caribou, Central, Dexter, Fort Kent, George Stevens, Greenville, Houlton, Mattanawcook Academy, Orono, Penquis, PCHS, Searsport, Washington Academy and Deer Isle-Stonington.

The Orono girls are the heavy favorites to repeat as girls team champions.

GIRLS TO WATCH:

Tia Tardy enters the meet with the #1 times in the 400m, 800m, 1600m and 3200m. #2 in the 200m. 

Lauren Stoops of Orono enters the meet with the #1 times in the 100m, 100h, 200m and 300h.

Mavis Taungatu'a of Bucksport enters the meet with #1 seeds in discus and shot put. #2 javelin.

Kelsey Kneeland of Mattanawcook Academy is #1 in the high jump.

Morgan Dauk of GSA is #1 in javelin.

Allison Pickering of Orono #1 in pole vault.

Samantha Round of Orono #1 in triple jump.

Katherine O'Brien of Orono #1 in long jump.

Rebecca Lopez-Anido of Orono has the #2 times in PVC in the 400m and 800m.

Freshman Cayden Spencer-Thompson of Mattanawcook Academy is the top seed in 3 events.

BOYS TO WATCH:

Cayden Spencer-Thompson of Mattanawcook Academy is #1 in the high jump, long jump and triple jump.

Michaiah Robinson of Washington Academy is #1 in the 200m. #2 at 100m and 400m.

John Hassett of GSA is #1 in the 1600m and 3200m. #2 in the 800m #4 at 400m and #6 at 200m.

Jake Koffman of Orono is #1 in the javelin and discus. #2 in the shot put.

Oneko Lowe of Washington Academy is #1 at 100m, #2 at 200m and #3 in the long jump.

Tristan Butterfield of Orono is #1 in the 400m and 800m. #3 at 3200m and #4 at 1600m.

Stephen Nelson of Orono is #1 in the 300m hurdles and #2 in long jump.

Johan Bradley of Bucksport High School is #1 in the pole vault. 

Jacob Fandel is #2 at 1600m and #3 at 400m and 800m.

SPRINTS

The top 10 girls entered in the 100m dash are all under 14 seconds. Lauren Stoops of Orono has the top seed at 13.02. Sophomores JoJo Fields of Caribou and Ottilie McPhail of Central are seeded at 13.32 and 13.38.  In the 200m dash Stoops is the only runner seeded under 27 seconds. Sydney Allen of Central, Danielle Cummings of Dexter and Katie O'Brien of Orono are all seeded sub 28 seconds. The 400m dash looks to be a close race. Kassidy Dill of Orono and Sydney Allen are the top seeds and are separated by .1 second 1:02.81 vs 1:02.91. Hanna Jordan of GSA, Mazie Smallidge of GSA and Camille Kohtala of Orono should all finish high on the podium.

Washington Academy has the top 2 seeds in the boys 100m dash. Oneko Lowe 11.64 and Michaiah Robinson 11.68 will be challenged by Houlton sprinters Ethan Fletcher 11.70 and Austin Brown 11.88. Eason Ye of GSA also enters this race seeded sub 12 at 11.99.  The 200m dash is another match up with Michaiah Robinson and Oneko Lowe as the top seeds. Freshman Josh Rand of Central the #3 seed will challenge for the win. In the 400m dash Tristan Butterfield of Orono is the favorite to win followed closely by Michaiah Robinson of Washington Academy. 

DISTANCE

Tia Tardy of Orono High School is only running the 1600m at this meet. Look for Tia to go sub 5. Hannah Steelman is the #2 seed at  5:19.28 and should finish an easy 2nd. Mary Brenna Catus of Searsport is having a breakout season. Mary, Alexis Rodriguez of Caribou and Mary Richardson of GSA will make this a great race as they battle for 3rd.  The 800m dash will showcase a healthy Rebecca Lopez-Anido from Orono High School. Becky should easily win the 800 and has the ability to go sub 2:20. Look for Mary Brenna Catus of Searsport, Madeline Gudde of Caribou and Alexis Rodriguez of Caribou to have a close race for 2nd place.  Hannah Steelman of Orono is the top seed in the 3200m at 11:29.81 and is the only girl in the field sub 12 minutes. Sophomores Mary Richardson, Eliza Broughton and Mary Brenna Catus will vie for 2nd place.

The boys 1600m run will be a close race. John Hassett is the top seed 4:35.85. John will be challenged by Jacob Fandel of Orono, Matt Keresey of Orono and Isaiah Brown of Houlton. The top 9 seed times in the 1600m are all sub 5.  John Hassett is also the top seed in the 800m dash (1:59.69). Jacob Fandel will again challenge John as the #2 seed (2:00.22). In the 3200m look for Isaiah Brown of Houlton to win. Chathu Karunasiri and Evan Desmond of Caribou will battle for 2nd and 3rd. Brendon Penfold of Deer Isle-Stonington is seeded sub 12 minutes and will finish high on the podium. 

JUMPS/HURDLES

Eileen Patton of Caribou is the #1 seed in the 100m hurdles. She will be challenged by Mazie Smallidge of GSA, JoJo Fields of Caribou and Paige Ireland of Searsport. The top 4 are seperated by less than one second. This should be a great race. Lauren Stoops of Orono is the heavy favorite to win the girls 300m hurdles as the only seed under 50 seconds (46.56). Bella Cimeno of GSA, Molly Sheehan of WA and Eliza Broughton of GSA should round out the top 4. Kelsey Kneeland of Mattanawcook Academy enters the high jump at 5' 1". Libby Cook of Central and freshman Camille Kohtala of Orono both enter at 4' 10" and could challenge Kneeland for the win.  Katie O'Brien of Orono is the top seed in the long jump and is the only jumper over 16' this season. Orono teammates Emma Honey and Samantha Round are seeded over 15'. Allison Pickering is the top seed in pole vault at 10' 3".  Samantha Round and Emma Honey of Orono are the top seeds in the triple jump. This could go either way as they are separated by 3 inches.

Keenan Collett of Orono is the top seed in the boys 110 hurdles at 17.25 seconds. Teammate Stephen Nelson and Alex Taylor-Lash of GSA will challenge for the win.  Stephen Nelson and Keenan Collett of Orono will battle for the win in the 300m hurdles as they are the top seeds. Colby Cates-Wright of WA and Alex Taylor-Lash should round out the top 4 spots.  Freshman Cayden Spencer-Thompson of Mattanawcook Academy has made a name for himself this season as one of Maine's best jumpers. Cayden, cousin of Tia Tardy, enters the high jump seeded #1 at 6 feet. Cayden is also the top seed in the long jump (20' 9") and #1 in triple jump (42' 7"). Stephen Nelson of Orono and Oneko Lowe of WA will challenge for the win in the long jump as both have jumped over 20 feet this season. Branden Allen of Dexter, Kyle Ham of Central and freshman Trent Lick of Orono have all jumped over 38 feet in the triple jump this season. The pole vault belongs to Johann Bradley this season. Johann is the top seed at 12' 6".

Jake Koffman set a new Maine all-time best in the discus earlier this spring with his 186-3 throw.

THROWS

Mavis Taungatu'a of Bucksport is the #1 seed in shot (37' 9.5") and #1 in disc (109' 5"). Mavis will be challenged in the discus by Orono freshman Lauren Melanson (105' 6") and Orono senior Emma Honey (102' 1").  A good battle for second in the shot with Kiera Rush of Central, Haylee Patterson of PCHS and Emily Fraser-Read of Central. Morgan Dauk of GSA is the top seed in javelin at 119' 2". Mavis Taungatu'a will challenge with the #2 seeded 110' 2". Eileen Patton enters the event as the only other athlete throwing over 100 feet this season (104' 9").

Austin Keib of Bangor Christian enters the shot put seeded #1 (45' 8.25") over last years winner #2 seed Jake Koffman of Orono (42' 3.75").  Jake Koffman of Orono is the state leader in discus. Koffman holds the PCV record in the event with a throw of 162' 5" last year. Koffman enters as the #1 seed of 186' 3".  Jake Koffman also enters as the top seed in javelin with 155' 3". Caden Williams of Calais and Joshua Martin of Penquis will challenge for 2nd overall.
