Westbrook & TA girls tie, Scarborough boys best in SMAA

The SMAA girls title came down to the final event the pole vault with Bonny Eagle leading with 72, while  Thornton Academy was second with 71.5, and Westbrook in 4th with 63 points. 

Westbrook scored 10 points as Kiersten Hilton equalled the SMAA Southwesterns record with a 10-0 clearance to give the Blue blazes 73 points. While Maria Seneres of Thornton cleared 8-0 to tie for 5th place giving the Trojans 1.5 points which gave them 73 points to tie for the team victory. This was the first time since 1994 that Westbrook has won the Southwesterns title, while Thornton Academy defended their title.

Athletes battled warm conditions all day long, and by the end of the meet, ambulances had to come two take two athletes away due to heat related conditions.

On the track Bonny Eagle's Elisabeth Redwood dominated the sprints as the University of Maine bound senior won the 100m, 200m & 400m for the Scots. 

In the closest race of the day in the 1600m, Scarborough's Laura Volan & Bonny Eagle's Ami Beaumier battled all the way to the line, they were given identical times of 5:33.86. Beaumier would come back to win the 3200m later in the day.

The Blue Blazes were led by the jumpers as they contributed 54 of the teams 73 points.

Westbrook freshman sensation Nyagoa Bayak won the high jump with a 5-4 clearance, she attempted a new meet record but came up short. Bayak added a personal best of 16-5 1/4 in the long jump for another ten points, she also added 8 points with a runner-up finish in the triple jump to teammate Kelly Dyer who jumped a personal best 35-7 1/2. Bayak was named the field event most outstanding performer for her efforts

Thornton Academy's Samantha Curran won the shot put with a throw of 37-4, while Cheverus's Emily Grinnell threw Class A #2 118-11 to take the discus. Curran & Grinnell were named CO-Field event athletes of the regular season.

In the relays Cheverus ran Class A #3 with a 51.53 effort, the Stags added a Class A #2 mark in the 4x400 as they won in 4:16.04. Deering won the 4x800 in a Class A leading 10:09.07.

On the boys side Scarborough cruised to the team title as the Red Storm tallied 112 points throughout the day, Deering & South Portland tied for second each with 75 points.

There were three conference records set on the day as Daniel Guiliani threw 66-0 1/4 to break his own shot put record. His teammates Ruay Bol leaped 45-9 1/4 to break the triple jump record, while Scarborough's Sam Rusak cleared 14-5 1/2 to break the pole vault record.

Speaking of Rusak he scored 38 individual points to pace the Red Storm. Rusak won the high jump with a personal best 6-4 clearance on his final attempt to win the event. He added another win in the 200m, in addition to his record breaking vault, he was the runner-up in the 110m hurdles.

Scarborough also got a pair of victories from senior Colin Tardiff as he ran 4:27.33 to take the 1600m, he doubled back to win the 3200m as well. His teammate Andrew Sholl completed a sweep of the distance races for the Red Storm as he eeked out a win in the 800m by .03, Sholl was also the 1600m runner-up by just .17. Sholl was presented with the SMAA track athlete of the season.

Guiliani was a double winner as he won the discus with heave of 159-4, in addition to his record breaking shot out victory to score 20 points for the Red Riots. Guiliani won the SMAA Field Event Athlete of the season, and added the meet Field Event performer award as well.

His teammate Ruay Bol had a standout day adding 28 individual points. Bol won the long jump with a leap of 20-11, broke the triple jump meet record, and added a 6-2 clearance in the high jump that was good for second place.

The Rams of Deering got a huge day out of senior Paolo DeMarco who won two individual events, an anchored the winning 4x400m relay. DeMarco won the 110m hurdles in 15.74, he then dominated the 300m hurdles in a Class A leading 40.62. In the relay the Rams set a state leading mark of 3:31.96 to close out the meet.

Westbrook opened the meet in the 4x800 with a Class A #2 effort of 8:20.55

Burt Dow of Marshwood won the 400m in a Class A #2 time of 51.04.
