NB Nationals Day 2

Day 2 at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals saw the boys decathlon get under way, with Belfast senior Drew Nealey & Scarborough junior Sam Rusak competing.

Rusak got day 1 of the decathlon underway with a personal best 11.55, that mark was worth 742 points. Nealey followed in section 2, and crushed his previous best of 11.92 with a 11.63, worth 725 points.

Next up was the long jump where Nealey leaped 19-9 on his first attempt, that ended up being his best and another 591 points. Rusak had his best jump on his second attempt with a 19-4 effort into a a strong headwind, his effort was worth 563 points.

Event number three was the shot put. Nealey threw 39-11 1/4 on his second and third attempts, the effort was worth 617 points. His throw was the 6th best in the field. Rusak was one spot behind him in the 7th spot with a best heave of 39-8 on his first attempt, good for 612 points.

The fourth event saw Nealey clear 6-2 on his final attempt, he then came back to clear 6-3 1/4 on his first attempt to give him 723 points & the 3rd best jump on the day. Rusak was once again one spot behind with 6-2 clearance worth 696 points.

The final event of day was the 400m, Rusak led the way with a 52.07 effort in section 2, the time earned him 722 points. Nealey finished in 12th as he ran 52.46 which garnered him 705 points.

After day 1, Nealey sits in 8th place with 3361 points, while Rusak is in 9th with 3335 points. Both athletes are on personal best pace.

In the emerging elite two mile Luke Laverdiere of Yarmouth ran 9:46.79 for 2 miles to place 13th overall.

In the elite shot put Brewer Austin Lufkin had his best throw of 55-11 1/4 on his second attempt. He placed 24th overall in the competition that was won by Adrian Piperi with a throw of 73-5 1/4 on his last attempt.
