Pierce & Hammerton take top spots in WMC D2, Wells Boys & St Dom's girls victorious


Maine Coast Waldorf senior Tucker Pierce sprinted out to the early lead in the WMC Championship race on Friday on the campus of St Joseph's College.

"It narrows really quickly" Pierce said of the course start

Pierce was able to settle in after the quick start, as he maintained his spot at the front of the pack, crossing in third place overall, and the top spot in the WMC D2 race with his 17:08 effort.

"I was hoping there would be others to run with but it didn't work out that way" Pierce said of his race.

Wells junior Mitch Libby was next across the line with his 17:15 effort, showing he's fit and ready to challenge for a top finish in the Class B Southern Regional next week.

Libby was hoping to chase Pierce down today, "My goal was to beat Tucker today, but it didn't happen." 

Libby's teammate Wesley Moody ran 17:32 to placed third, he was followed to line 12 seconds later by Wilson Moore of Waynflete

Maine Coast Waldorf senior Dylan Wu had a strong run to round out the top five, Wu ran 17:46 holding off his teammate Nick Neveu by 1 second.

Wells cruised the the team title with a score of 32, Maine Coast Waldorf was the top Class C school in second place with 57 as they held off Waynflete who placed third with 69.

Alexandra Hammerton a sophomore from St Dominic Academy took the WMC D2 individual title as she broke away from her teammates in the final mile, and chased down several runners ahead of her.

Hammerton, who goes by the name "Bugsy" was in a pack of with her teammates at the two mile.

"We run better when we're together" she said after the race.

The final mile saw her pick off 7-8 girls ahead of her as she crossed the finish in 21:13. Her winning effort was two second better the runner-up Samantha Halmos from Poland.

Another Knight finished third as freshman Olivia Ouellette continued her strong freshman campaign as she stopped the clock at 21:20. Ouellette's time edged out Wells sophomore Heidi Fortin by one second.

Rounding out the top 5 was Sydney Sirios who had her best race of the season as she ran 21:23.

In their return to the WMC, St Dominic won the girls team title as they tallied 31 points to easily turn back runner-up Wells who scored 65. St Dom's had 4 of the first 9 finishers. Poland rounded out the top three teams as the Knights tallied 78. Yarmouth who entered as the heavy favorite rested their top 4 runners in the varsity race.
