Rand smashes course record- Greely Boys/Cape Girls dominate teams

It was a record breaking day at Gull Crest Field XC course in Cape Elizabeth this afternoon, as Cape Elizabeth senior Matt Rand showed late season from breaking Miles Bartlett's course record by 5 ticks of the clock, as he ran 15:20.4 over the 3 mile course. Rand meant business from the gun as he went out to lead, followed closely by the trio of Logan Price (Jr. Greely), James LePage (Sr. Greely) & Alex Moser (York). Rand and Price started to seperate from the field by a few seconds early as they hit the mile in 4:59, with the others just a few clicks back. Rand continued to set the pace with Price hanging on his shoulder applying the pressure, the pace slowed a bit during the 2nd mile as they passed through in 10:12, which is run on some twisty and rooted footing. Rand seized control of the race on the hill just after two miles as he powered home to victory on his home course, running his last mile in 5:08 and took down the record. Price was 16 ticks back 15:36, but still had a fine time as he led #2 ranked Greely Rangers to the team victory. Following was LePage as he was closing fast over the last 300m, 15:41 and Alex Moser was 4th in 15:52. Before today only 5 boys had broken 16:00 on the course while today the top 4 accomplished the feat. While Mark McCauley (Jr. Greely) was just one sec off it with a 16:01.

As mentioned above Greely behind the strength of their top 3 took the team title with a low score of 30. Cape Elizabeth packed a bunch in around 12-18 for 2nd (48), while a young Falmouth squad has a solid day for 3rd (65), York was 4th with (84), and Wells scored (153). Greely looks like the team everyone will be chasing this fall in Western Maine Class B.

The girls meet showcased top ranked Cape Elizabeth's depth and talent. From the gun it was Emily Atwood & Marita Stressenger controlling the pace as they seprated themselves from the rest of the field. Atwood took the early pace with Stressenger a few strides back. Mallory Goding (Greely) held the 3d position, with Cape's #3 Kelsey Barton battling with Michelle Swiatek (York) for a top 5 position. Atwood & Stressenger hit the mile in 5:49 as they pulled away from the rest. Coming out the of the woods and up onto the field before the finish it looked like Atwood had the race won, as she had put 8 seconds on Stressenger. However, the flat fast finish set up nicely for the Stressengerr, who has excellent track speed. With 280m the lead was 4 seconds, at the top of the home stretch Stressenger continued to creep closer and it turned into a mad dash for the line the last 100m. Stressenger eeked out the win over her teammate 18:09 to 18:09.1, both ran excellent races and laid it all on the line.  Although they didn't break Elise Moody-Roberts course record, both Stressenger & Atwood posted the #2 & #3 fastest times on the course all-time. The Cape train continued as Barton moved up to 3rd in 19:12. Goding held on for a strong 4th place 19:20, with Swiatek 2 ticks back in 5th. Cape brought home the next 2 spots as freshman Catherine Tierney (19:46)kicked past teammate Hannah Doss (19:48), this rounded out Cape scoring 5.

Cape Elizabeth showed they are ready to run against anyone today, placing 7 girls in the top ten, all the while #4 runner Rachel Nichols was held out. York had a good day coming in 2nd with (53), Greely & Falmouth were even today, both scoring (82)
