Greely Girls & MDI Boys are the best in Class B

Greely girls win 14th state title overall, while MDI boys win first in school history.

The Greely girls are back on top of Class B after a nine year hiatus as the Rangers tallied 62.20 points to hold off a strong challenge from runner-up Mt Desert Island. On the boys side Mt Desert Island scored 58 points to outdistance runner-up Greely by 19.5 points.


Despite not winning an event outright, the Greely girls used quality and depth en route to the state title. Distance runners Katherine Leggat-Barr & Carolyn Todd did the heavy lfiting. Leggat-Barr finished 3rd in both the mile & 2 mile for 12 points, while Todd placed 4th in both events scoring 8 points total. 


Senior Zoe Lambert went from the 6th seed in the long jump up to third with her 16-2 1/4 leap on her final attempt. Lauren Williams another senior earned eight points with runner-up finish in the high jump, she cleared 5-0. While sophomore Maggie McCormick placed third in the pole vault with a 8-6 clearance.

The relays were another key part to the team title for the Rangers with the 4x800 (10:18.40) & 4x200 (1:53.58) earned third place finishes.


Mt Desert Island senior Tia Tardy was a double winner as she won the mile (5:04.95) by running from the front. She also won the 800m where she had to come from behind in the last 100 to grab the title, her time was 2:18.58. She couldn't complete the distance triple this year but she still scored right more points for her team with a a runner-up finish in the 2 mile (11:43.69).


Tardy's teammate Ashley Anderson contributed big points to the Trojans runner-up effort with 24 points. Anderson won the 200m dash her third event of the day in convincing fashion as she stopped the clock at 26.54. Earlier in the day she was the runner-up in the 55m dash with a 7.53, just .02 off first place, she added a third in the 400m (61.16).

Old Town's Olivia Damboise scored 28 points on the day with a pair of wins and a runner0up finish. Damboise started off the meet competing in the pole vault and long jump at the same time. She didn't let that bother her she she cleared a personal best 9-9 to win the vault, and finished as the runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 16-7 1/2. She won her second event of the day when she jumped 35-0 1/4 in the triple jump.

Defending 400m Tahlia Mullen of Lincoln Academy dealt with injury most of the winter, but the junior wasn't to be denied as she lead at the cut in and never was challenged as she ran a seasonal best 60.01.


On the boys the Trojans of Mt Desert Island made school history with their first ever indoor team title.

MDI got a win from senior Giovanni McKenzie in the triple jump to seal up the win before the final event McKeznie the top seed in the triple saved his best just for last as he got out to 42-8 on his final attempt. His winning jump was over two feet further than the runner-up.

Senior Noah Hutchinson proved another 10 points as he cleared 6-2 to win the high jump to open the meet. The Trojans got huge points in the shot put as well with junior Micah Hallett leading the way with a second place effort, sophomore Samuel Hoff was 5th while Gilbert Isaacs picked up a point with a 7th place finish.

Junior Griffin Maristany provided the spark on the track as he ran to a runner-up finish in the 400m with a personal best 52.35, freshman Liam Higgins added a 5th in the same race. Maristany would added a fourth place finish in the 200m (23.70). He would add a strong leg on the runner-up 4x200m team to close out the meet as well.


Washington Academy sprinter Michaiah Robinson was a standout in the sprints. Robinson won the 400m in 50.83 just .18 behind the state meet record. He came back to lower his own state lead in the 200m as he crushed the field with a 22.83

Yarmouth's Luke Laverdiere was a double winner as he took the mile (4:24.35) winning by over 24 seconds. He followed that up with another dominating win in the 2 mile where he ran 9:49.73 to win by 21 seconds.



Old Town's Troy Crawford had a big day on the track as the senior started his day off with a 6.76 in the 55m dash final to win the state title. He would come back to run a fast 23.18 to place second in the 200m. His anchor leg in the 4x200m brought the Coyotes from third place all the way to first as he was able to pass on the inside on lane 1 to secure the victory.
