State Champion Spotlight: Dominic Creenan (Westbrook HS)

State Champion spotlight: Dominic Creenan Westbrook HS

What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?

My preparations into the state meet were to basically just stretch more, especially my hamstrings and stay loose and feel good. Other than that I just made sure to get to bed on time and make sure I had a good amount of energy for meet day.

How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?

Coming into states I knew I was close to the top seeds for all my events. All I had to say to myself is that I'm doing this for fun, it's what I love to do, and to not get upset no matter what happens.

You had the competition won and then hit your personal best on the last jump 21-6 3/4, what did it mean to win , and be able to set a personal best in the process?

By the end of the long jump finals, after everybody had gotten all there jumps in and I knew I had won, I was relieved and the nerves were completely gone because all I had to do was get my last jump in. My coach told me to drive and give it everything I had so that's what I did and ended up getting the PR of 21-6, I couldn't have been more happy with that outcome.

You helped your team to a runner-up finish in the state meet, what did it mean for Westbrook to excel as a team this winter?

Helping my team get to a second place finish with not a lot of guys made me very happy because my coaches and teammates have been working very hard all season, and to be able to be a big part of that made me proud to be on the team, and made me feel good about what I was doing.

Coming into the season what were your goals and did you achieve them?

Coming into the season I had two goals, one being to get sub 8 in the 55 hurdles, and the second was to get 21 feet in long. I had reached my first goal getting 7.92 in the hurdles during Southwesterns. During the state meet I got 21 in the long jump. So I did everything I set out to do this season.

How do you think winning an individual state title will effect you heading into outdoors

Winning a state championship has been a major goal of mine ever since freshman year, and to finally achieve that makes me feel great. Now all I have to do is just work harder and try and get new PR's for outdoor and then to beat those PR's next year.
