Oxford Hills men, Mt.Ararat women take rain soaked KVAC meet

In a meet rescheduled because of the threat of rain last Friday the Mt. Ararat women's track team (127) easily defeated Mt. Blue (89), Brunswick (77), and Oxford Hills (76) during a Monday afternoon of steady, and sometimes heavy, rainfall in Topsham.

On the men's side the Oxford Hills Vikings racked up 152 points to best Mt. Ararat (80.5), Brunswick (75), and Mt. Blue (51.5).

Rain led to the cancellation of the pole vault, miscues during relays, slippery throwing, and more than the customary numbers of scratches so in spite of conditions the meet moved fairly quickly.

The Mt. Ararat women were led by Sara York with two individual firsts (400, HJ) and two relay wins (4x100, 4x400). York's 4'8" mark in the high jump matched her outdoor personal best. Mt. Ararat's depth was on display as the Eagles women swept the relays, opening the meet with a rain soaked win in the 4x800, and the jumps. In addition to York's win, Mt. Ararat took four of five places in the high jump. Joining York with two individual wins were Wyley Fitzpatrick who took both the long and triple jumps (29' 1.5", a new best) and junior Katherine Leckbee who dominated the 1600 and 800.

Although Oxford Hills finished last in team scoring the Viking women had their usual strong showing in throws, taking four of five places in the javelin. Jadah Adam's 91' 5.5" won the event. Maighread Laliberte took second in the javelin while also winning both the shot put and discus.

Leading Mt. Blue to a second place team finish were Isabelle Thomas with wins in the 100 and 300 hurdles, and Marah Black with top spots in the 100 and 200.  Taking third in the javelin Thomas notched new personal bests in both the javelin (81'9.5") and 300MH (55.04). Black and Thomas also scored as part of Mt. Blue's second place 4x100 team.

Like the women, the men from Oxford Hills dominated the javelin, taking four of five places, led by Dawson Stevens' winning throw of 155'11". The Vikings also did well in the other throws taking the three of five places in the discus, which was won by Jamal Hill (92'5" PR). The only throw not won by Oxford Hills was the men's shot where Brunswick's Sullivan Boyd notched the win with a throw of 38' 0.5".

But the men from Oxford Hills were successful across the track events with firsts in the 100, 110H, 200, 4x100, 4x400, 4x800, and triple jump. The Vikings also took seconds in the 1600, 200, 300MH, 3200, 400, 800 and long jump. The only event on the track that Oxford Hills did not win, or finish second, was the 1600-meter race walk, which had no entrants from Oxford Hills.

Avenging an early season loss to Brunswick's Seth White was Oxford Hill's John Bowen with a winning 100M time of 11.71, just 0.02 better than White's 11.73. Bowen also took first in the 200 (23.61, new best), second in the long jump (won by White), and was part of the winning Viking 4x100 team.

Other firsts for the Vikings included Isaiah Jewell, 110MH and Silas Gordon in the triple jump (39'11.25" new PR). Taking second in both the 1600 and 3200 was Dominic Sclafani with new bests in each race (4:49:93 and 10:45:62).

Second place Mt. Ararat had just one individual winner with Cam Meier's 4:39:91 in the 1600 being good enough for the win. In addition to Boyd's shot put and White's long jump the third place Brunswick Dragons had firsts from Hunter Parker (300MH), Will Shaughnessy (3200), and Jaznel Burns (400). Ryan Olsen and Samuel Cenescar tied for top spot in the high jump.

Mt. Blue swept the 1600 race walk led by Bretton Winchester, and had a second individual winner in the 800 with Isaiah Reid's new PR of 2:11:05.

Oxford Hills, Mt. Ararat and Mt. Blue meet again Thursday May 11th at Edward Little, joined by Cony.

Brunswick will be at Morse on Friday May 12th with Lewiston, Medomak Valley, Oceanside and Lincoln Academy.
