South Portland senior Steven Smith continued his excellent spring as he won the New Balance National Outdoor 3k racewalk national title as he covered the distance in 13:49.09 to win the race by more than a minute. Smith who won the Class A 1600m racewalk title two weeks ago dominated the field of 5 boys.

The freshman took center stage today, and they performed at a high level. In the long jump Thornton Academy freshman Mia Taranko finished 6th in the long jump as she had a best of 17-4 1/4. On the track Emma Gallant of Cheverus won section three of the freshman 400m in a time of 57.03. That effort placed her 8th overall, and the mark was a new Maine state leader.

Scarborough's Jarett Flaker was busy as he finished 11th in the 100m dash trials with a time of 11.23. Unfortunately his race had the biggest head wind of -2.0, and he missed the final by .04. Without the wind his time would have been worth an 11.06. Flaker jumped back on the track 30 minutes after his 100m race, and set a new personal best of 50.12 to win section 4. His time broke his own Maine all-time best at 400m of 50.65. Also competing in the 100m race was Cheverus's Sean Tompkins who ran 11.46 to place 25th overall out of 44 runners, he also ran into a negative headwind of 1.6.
