Horne & Libby Reign Supreme in WMC XC Conference Championship

Jack Bassett of Cape wins D1 while Olivia Skillings of MCW takes D2, Cape & Maine Coast Waldorf girls win team titles, Freeport & Wells boys victorious.


Junior Lily Horne of Freeport (Flo50#6) took the early lead in the WMC XC Championship race and held it throughout the race as she was the only finisher to break 20 minutes on the challenging layout at St Joseph's College in Standish. Horne's winning effort was 19:54 holding off a strong effort from Cape Elizabeth freshman Lila Gaudrault  (Flo50 #12) who was nine seconds back at 20:03. 

Fryeburg senior Emily Carty ran to a third place finish in 20:35, while Olivia Skillings of Maine Coast Waldorf ran 20:48 good for fourth overall. Skillings was the top female in the D2 scoring. Freshman Olivia Reynolds 
also of Maine Coast Waldorf ran 21:12 to finish fifth.

Yarmouth standout Anneka Murrin (Flo50 #9) ran with her teammate Greta Elder as the pair finished sixth and seventh overall. They were followed by Cape's Camilla Grosso, and Poland's Olivia Ouellette. St Dominic Academy's Alexandra Hammerton rounded out the top ten with a time of 21:53.

In the D1 girls team race with Greely not running their varsity squad,  Cape Elizabeth cruised to the team team title with 48 points. The Capers averaged 21:48 with a pack time of 2:49. York running with top runner Kathryn Miller raced well to finish second with 57 points. Fryeburg Academy rounded out the top three with 67.

In D2, Maine Coast Waldorf stood above the rest as they tallied 42 points with a 22:12 average to outdistance runner-up Waynflete by 22 points, Wells was third with 73.

Flo50 #2 Mitch Libby of Wells showed why he's one of the top individuals as he cruised to win at the WMC XC Championship covering the 5k layout at St Joseph's College in 16:55 to outdistance the rest of the field by 35 seconds.

Libby and Sacopee Valley senior Troy Hendricks (Flo50 #13) went through the mile together in 5:11, Libby would open up a gap during the second mile which is largely downhill the first half, before climbing over the second half and never look back.

Cape Elizabeth sophomore Jack Bassett closed well over the final mile to move past Hendricks. Bassett's finishing time was 17:30 edging Hendricks by three seconds. Basset was the top individual in the D1 race. Next came Griffin Allaire of Wells in 17:38 giving the Warriors two low sticks.

Henry Spritz of Waynflete edged fellow Class C rival Nick Neveu of Maine Coast Waldorf for fifth place, 17:46 to 17:47.

A pair of Freeport Falcons came next with Alex Les in seventh and freshman Martin Horne in eighth. Next was Alfie Walker of Fryeburg followed by Nicolas Giandrea of Greely in tenth.

In the D1 team race Flo50#2 Greely rested their varsity squad, and Freeport took advantage of the opportunity as the Falcons placed 4 runners in the top 7 as they scored 37 points. The Falcons averaged 18:26. Cape Elizabeth was the runner-up with 57 points while Greely showed depth to finish third with 61 points.

In the D2 race Flo50 #6 Wells cruised to the team title for the second year in a row as the Warriors tallied 39 points with an 18:21 team average. Maine Coast Waldorf was the runner-up with 63, with Lake Region finishing third with 89 points.
