Northern Maine Class C Regional XC Championship Preview

Last year George Stevens Academy ended Orono's reign as Class C Northern Maine regional champions with a one point victory, and on Saturday the same two teams are expected to battle for the hardware again.

Coming into the season GSA had high hopes of repeating the success of a year ago with a majority of the scoring team back, but injuries have derailed things a bit so far. They have dealt with several ijuries this fall, and two of those runners (Mary Richardson & Zeya Lorio) were back at the PVC championship last week. GSA closed the gap over Orono by came up on the wrong end of a 26-29 score.

Orono despite the graduation of Hannah Steelman & Kassidy Dill have reloaded for another shot at a regional title. The Red Riots won the PVC Championship last week, an are the team to beat on Saturday.

Greater Houlton Christian Academy ranks as the third best squad on paper, and Limestone/MSSM appears to be line to nab the fourth team qualifying spot for the state meet.

Individually GSA senior Eliza Broughton coming off her PVC Championship will be the one to beat. Broughton took the title at Orono a week ago by 15 seconds over Camille Kohtala of Orono. Broughton has won six races this fall, including three times over top contender Kohtala. A year ago Eliza was the runner-up at regionals, and would love to finish off her last campaign in first.

Kohtala a junior has the fastest 5k in the field this fall as she ran 19:48 at FOC on the same course she will be competing on this weekend. In that race she finished ahead of Broughton. On the season Camille has three individual race wins.

Orono freshman Erin Gerbi is third ranked based of best 5k time with her 20:09, she finished third at the PVC championship last week.

The duo of Bridget Hill & Grace Graham of Greater Houlton Christian Academy are both string contenders for top five finishes, they have run 20:15 & 20:29 respectively this fall.
