Four State Records Fall On Day 1 Of NBIN

Boys Records | Girls Records

When the state's best athletes get to compete on the biggest stage they often rise to the level of the competition. On Friday at the Armory in New York City three state records fell during day one of the New Balance Indoor Nationals.

Scarborough sophomore Jarett Flaker got the record breaking going in the Emerging Elite 400m as the Class A state champion broke the state all-time best with his 49.24. Flaker won section 4 from lane 2, and finished 5th overall in a field of thirty. The mark broke the nine year old mark of 49.59 of Bangor's Ben Sinclair. In the process he lowered his own state sophomore record, he set the freshman mark at last year's NBIN with a 51.82.

In the Emerging Elite long jump Cayden Spencer-Thompson a junior from Mattanawcook Academy hopped on the runway for the first time this winter and hit a personal best 23-10 1/4. The mark shattered the Maine all-time best, and added two plus inches to the meet record. The previous Maine record was 23-0 1/2 set by Brett McIntire of Brunswick back in 2001. Cyaden is no stranger to breaking records as he has the indoor/outdoor triple jump marks, as well as outdoor long jump. The 23-10 1/4 would be enough for the win, in fact Spencer-Thompson had three other jumps over 23-0 on the day. The mark moves the junior into a tie for US#6 in the event. He will return to the runway on Sunday to compete in the championship triple jump.
