MDI boys cruise, John Bapst, Central girls finish deadlocked
Another rare tie happened in Penobscot Valley Conference track and field action on Saturday, this time on Mount Desert Island.
The John Bapst and Central girls both left a multi-team season opener in Bar Harbor with 137 points, with host MDI close behind with 127.
Also competing were Narraguagus (44), Dexter (35), Limestone/MSSM (35), Foxcroft Academy (14) and Sumner 6.
The cold, blustery day on MDI brought with it a challenging one to produce fast times and distances, but the athletes gutted out some fine performances.
Ashley Anderson of MDI, one of the state's top sprinters, singled in the 200 and posted a winning effort of 26.35.
Danielle Cummings of Dexter also got her season off to a fine start with a pair of victories, running to a 13.38 in the 100 dash and clearing 4-6 to win the high jump.
MDI's Dorothy LeMoine also earned two wins, taking the javelin (85-11) and shot put (32-8).
John Bapst got individual victories from Marah Sharp in the pole vault (7 feet), Grace Day in the long jump (14-3.50), Eilidh Sidaway in the 800 (2:51.97), Jaymie Sidaway in the 1600 (6:02.56) and Georgina La Grange in the 100 hurdles (18.20).
Central's individual champs were Jaeden Viani in the 400 (1:05.80) and Maija Overturf in the 300 hurdles (56.82) and triple jump (32-8).
In the boys' meet, defending PVC large-school champ Mt Desert Island racked up 217.50 points to outdistance runner-up John Bapst (110.50) with ease.
Central (64), Sumner (46) and Dexter (27) rounded out the top five.
The Trojans did most of their damage in the throwing events, piling on 88 points in the shot put, javelin and discus.
Croix Albee led the charge there, winning all three events with distances of 133-10 in the javelin, 144-1 in the discus and 52 feet even in the shot put.
Ben Cotton of John Bapst also shined in winning three events.
The Crusaders' senior claimed the 100 dash (11.46), 200 dash (24.01) and long jump (20-1.50).
MDI's other individual winners included Jose Chumbe in the pole vault and 800, Cody Parker in the 3200, Owen Mild in the 400 and Elijah Joyce in the 110 hurdles.
