Girls Class A Top Teams


Brewer (#10 ranked) The Witches are the defending champions; they have been steadily improving this fall. They were 3rd in the Mt. Blue relays last week, while they finished 6th at the FOC. The Witches have been led by sophomore Sara Chavarie. They will be chasing Mt. Blue & Mt. Ararat, both of whom have finished ahead of Brewer this fall.

Mt. Ararat (#8 ranked) The Eagles will be hungry for this one, coming off a narrow defeat by 3 seconds at the Mt. Blue Relays at the hands of Mt. Blue. Mt. Ararat has the best depth of any team in the league. They have been led this fall by Katie Spies & Emma Wood. The Eagles took down Mt. Blue in a regular season matchup on 9/24, although Mt. Blue wasn’t at full strength that day.

Mt. Blue (#7 ranked) The Cougars will have confidence coming into this one having just eeked out a win over Mt. Ararat at the Mt. Blue Relays last week. Mt. Blue has been running well lately and seems to be peaking at the right time. They finished 5th at the Festival of Champions. They have been led by defending individual champion, Melody Lam.

Maranacook (Unranked) The Black Bears will look to challenge Medomak behind individual favorite Abby Mace. Maranacook. They will need solid races out of Taylor Burr and Caroline Colan if they are to compete with Medomak

Medomak Valley (#12 ranked) The Panthers have been running very strong in 2009; most recently they won the Camden Hills Invitational.  They are the defending Class B KVAC champions, and will be looking to make it two in a row. Medomak has been led by Gwen Moiles & Kiana Ocean this fall.

Winslow (Unranked) The Black Raiders will look to continue their improvement in 2009, they placed 4th in 2008 and have a shot to do much better than that on Saturday. Winslow has beaten Hampden & Maranacook this season. They have been led Molly Schassberger.

Boys Class A Top Teams

 

Brunswick (#3 ranked) The Dragons have been the top team in the KVAC to date, and will be looking to capture that elusive conference championship. Brunswick is coming off a KVAC regular season win over #12 ranked Edward Little; they were also the top KVAC team at the FOC. The Dragons have the a powerful 1-2 punch headed by individual favorite Will Geoghegan, his teammate Liam Cassidy is one of the top runners in the conference as well.

Mt. Blue (Unranked) The Cougars have been one of the top teams in the KVAC this fall. They will look to improve on a 5th place finish from 2008. They edged rival Cony on a 6th man tie-breaker at the FOC. Leading the way for Mt. Blue is individual title threat Kelton Cullenberg.

Cony (Unranked)
The Rams have been one of the most improved teams in the KVAC this fall. They have been in and out of the top 12 teams in the fan/athlete poll and have received votes every week. They are coming off a controversial win at the Mt. Blue Relays, and were the 3rd KVAC Class A at the FOC, narrowly losing out to Mt. Blue on the 6th man tie-breaker. Cony is lead by one of the individual favorites, Luke Fontaine.

Edward Little (#12 ranked) The Red Eddies have been the team to watch in the last couple of weeks. They shocked everyone at the FOC, when they finished 3rd, the second team from Maine, but then it was ruled they had used an ineligible runner a week later. Despite that they are still one of the top teams in the KVAC, and will be battling for a top spot. They are coming off a defeat at the hands of Brunswick last week but defeated rival Lewiston. EL has been led by Sadam & Omar Abdi this fall.

Boys Class B Top Teams

 

Hampden (#11 ranked) The Broncos have moved down to Class B this fall and are the team to beat at the conference championship.  Hampden is coming off a strong win at the Pendale Invitational, and earlier this fall placed 9th in the FOC the top KVAC Class B school in the meet. They have been led by Darick Frye this fall who is one of the individual favorites.

Maranacook (Unranked) The Black Bears are the defending champions, and return a strong squad in 2009. They will be looking for a top 2 finish. Maranacook is coming off a 6th place finish at the Mt. Blue Relays, earlier this year they finished 18th at the FOC, ahead of Class B rivals Winslow & Medomak. This fall Evan Vincent & Justin Greely have led the way.
