Girls 3200m New England champion & New All-time State best for Kennebunk sophomore Abbey Leonardi 10:26.48
Abbey Leonardi added another chapter to her long list of accomplishment. The sophomore won her first new england track title, captured the 3200m. Abbey sat back for the first three laps, going through in (76.5, 2:38.5, 4:00) following Lindsey Crevioserat (Glkastonbury) the 1600m runner-up, CT All-State champ and NIN 5k champ. Abbey could since the pace slowing, and at the 1300m took over at the front and never looked back, her next 400 was 78- going through the 1600m in 5:18. Only Jacy Christiansen (Mascenic Regional, NH) would go with her. Leonardi clicked off an 80 going through 2k in 6:38, but couldn't shake Christiansen. The gap started to open as there was just 800m to go, as Abbey threw in a 78 lap (7:56), Christiansen was broken. Leonardi continued to push crossing 2800m in 9:13.5, she would continued to pick the pace up, covering the last 400m at 73, her last 800m was 2:30.5 with the last 1600m in a fast 5:08.5. For Leonardi it was a perosnal best, and escliped her all-time Maine best time, by close to 10 seconds, she ran 10:36.3 earlier in the year. The time ranks her #17 in the country.
Boys 800m New England Champion & New All-time State best for Greely senior Mark McCauley 1:52.8 (photo by Dave Flewelling)
Mark took the race out from the gun, going through in 54.x, no one would challenge him as he powered his way home, statying relaxed throughout, before crossing the line in a new personal best, and all-time state best, which he set earlier in the year at 1:53.4. McCauley would have to stand and watch the fast heat take a shot at his time of 1:52.8, and after a fast opening 400m of 53.x, it looked like his time might not hold up but the runners from the first heat tied up a bit in the last 80m and he would hold on for his first New England title, McCauley was the Mile runner-up indoors.
Boys 1600m Will Geoghegan (Brunswick) wins 4:13.15 to take the New England title, Class C champion Henry Sterling (NYA) finishes 5th 4:15.62 (photo by Chris Mazzurco)
Henry Sterling of NYA took the race out fast, clocking 60.x for the first lap of the 1600m. The pace would slow a bit in the next quarter, but Sterling continued to lead (2:06) with Will Geoghegan and Jack Terwilliger (Cheverus) 2:07 right behind. At the 900m mark, Geoghegan surged to the front. At the bell it was still Maine 1-2-3, with Geoghegan coming through in 3:12. Geoghegan created a little distance from the chase pack at the 1300m mark, but he had all he could handle from a late charging Isaac Fithian (Prospect Mountain, VT), but as he has done all year, he responded to the challenge and came away the victor, closing the last lap in 61.x. Geoghegan also won the indoor Mile NE title.
Keila Grigware (Biddeford) comes up big again, repeats as New England Champion in Javelin with a throw of 136-4 to dominate the compeititon by close to 14ft! Grigware took the lead early on with a throw of 127-0, then on her 2nd throw in the finals uncorked her best throw of the day, 136-4.
