Scarborough Boys/Cheverus Girls dominate at FOC/ McClintock & Leonardi win individual races

Matt McClintock (Madison) 16:06.1 led the boys race start to finish to defeat runner-up Harlow Ladd (Messalonskee) by 5 seconds, and 3rd place Chase Brown (Boothbay pictured right) by 6 seconds. McClintock remains undefeated on the 2010 season, and today took down two of his top competitors for the Class C title.  Mike Tate (JH Gillis HS, Nova Scotia) finished 4th (16:16), with Tim Follo (Falmouth) 16:29.5 rounding out the top 5.

McClintock planned on running a faster time, but the course conditions hampered his chase for a sub 16, but if people didn’t know who McClintock was before the race, they certainly do now, as he looked strong leading the entire race, with Ladd and Brown breathing down his back for a good portion of the race. Girls

The girls race featured some of top talent the state of Maine has ever seen, and they didn’t disappoint. Abbey Leonardi (Kennbunk) was impressive, breaking the FOC meet record by 27 seconds, stopping the clock at 17:58.4. The time is the fastest Leonardi has clocked on the season, but off the course record of 17:48. Leonardi was chased early on by Emily Durgin (Cheverus), who was running just behind Abbey for the first couple of miles, but once again Abbey opened up the gap in the final mile, last week at Southwest Classic she put close to 30 seconds on Durgin in the last mile, but in just one week the gap has shrunk down to 23 seconds, a sure sign Durgin is getting fit.

Abby Mace (Maranacook) was a strong 3rd, breaking 19 minutes with a 18:56.5, Mace was the top Class while Cheverus’s Fiona Hendry (19:09) was strong throughout, moving from 5th to 4th over the final 1k. Old Town’s Dacie Manion clocked a new personal best of 19:19 to nab a top 5 finish.  Brunswick’s Katie McMahon finished 6th (19:27) the 3rd time this year she has been under 19:30. Also running well was Mikayla Frazier (32nd) 21:04.9, & Nicole Smith (45thh) 21:22.6. Rounding out the top 5 was Marjjorie Lee (115th) 22:33.4

In the girls freshman race, the pace went out very hard, with Shannon Conley (Cheverus) leading the way in 2:45, behind her was Brittany Bowman (Camden Hills). Conley would stay in the lead the entire race, running the 7th fastest time of the day when it was all over, 19:43.4. Shannon was the only freshman under 20 minutes. Camden Hills Bowman had a strong day as well, running 20:01.8, the 9th fastest time of the day. Aleta Looker (Ellsworth) was the 3rd across the line, 20:10 good for 12th overall. Brunswick’s Teresa Murphy was 4th (20:26) good for 16th overall, and Kiera Murray 5th (20:27) ended up 17th overall. With the level of talent in the freshman class, Maine girls HS running should continue at a high level for many years to come.
