MaineTrackXC Sophomore Boys 2010 Rewind
The sophomore class had a strong year in 2010, as some of those who excelled in 2009 as freshman continued their success while their were several newcomers to the bunch as well. At the front was arguably the top runner in the state regardless of class, Class B state champion Silas Eastman of Fryeburg Academy. Eastman who was the top freshman in 2009, was undefeated in Maine, and didn't lose to a Maine HS runner all season long. Silas clocked the #2 5k time in the state this season, 16:02.44, he also was the top Maine finisher at the New England meet, earning all-new england honors via his 20th place finish. Jack Pierce of Class C Merriconeag had a strong campaign as well in 2010. Pierce was the 3rd fastest freshman a year ago, and continued his success in this year with a 3rd place finish at Western Maine Regional, and 4th place at the Class C state where he set a new lifetime best of 16:45. In Class A Robbie Hall (Scarborough) was the top sophomore again this year. Hall had a strong season running a personal best at the Class A state meet of 17:16.22. Robbie placed 10th in the Western Maine Regional and 19th in the state meet. A couple of new faces that emerged for the sophomores were Nick Kopf (Hampden Academy) & Cameron Nadeau (Biddeford). Kopf was the 43rd freshman last season, but he put in his miles this summer, and by the end of the year had a big breakthrough finishing 15th in the regional, then placing 14th at the Class B state meet running a lifetime best by almost 30 seconds with a 17:18. Another new face was Biddeford's Cameron Nadeau who didn't run as a freshman. Nadeau had a strong first year, qualifying for the Class A state meet via his 8th place finish at the Western Maine Regional meet. Nadeau would go on to finish 20th in the state meet running a lifetime best 17:22.08.
Silas Eastman-Fryeburg Academy Sophomore of the Year
Silas Eastman (Fryeburg Academy) went undefeated against Maine competition in 2010. Eastman won the SW Classic, WMC Conference championship, Western Maine regional, & Class B state title this year. Eastman clocked 16:02 at the state meet for his fastest 5k of the season, he then went on the earn all-new england honors via his 20th place finish. Silas was dominate in many of his victories, and often had to run up front alone with others chasing him, despite this he was up to the challenge each time. Eastman has two more years left to solidify his legacy as one of the best Maine HS XC runners of all-time, already many coaches speak of how he reminds them of the great Ben True.
2. Jack Pierce Merriconeag Waldorf
Jack Pierce (Merriconeag-Waldorf) had a very strong sophomore season. Pierce clocked the 19th fastest time on the season for 5k, 16:45.27 at the Class C State championship where he finished 4th. Jack also had strong races at the SW Classic (8th), WMC Conference championship (5th), Western Maine regional (3rd). Pierce also won a race for the first time this fall when he took a WMC regular season meet at Freeport. Pierce improved his best times by over a minute this fall, he's established himself as one of the top runners regardless of class in the state, at the state meet his time was good for 12th best overall.
3. Robby Hall- Scarborough
Robby Hall (#255) was once again one of the top sophomores in the state. Hall clocked a personal best 17:16 at the Class A state meet finishing 19th. Robbie was on the Class A state champion Scarborough team, running as the 4th runner most of the season. Robbie also had placed 10th in the Western Maine regional meet, earning SMAA second team honors.
