Bonny Eagle Sweeps Class A Titles

The Bonny Eagle Scots swept the Class A titles @ Windham HS on Saturday. Each team's victory was in doubt until the final event was over, the boys entered the 4x400 down 2 points to Edward Little. The Scots seeded #1 in the event ended up 3rd which gave them the state title by 4 points. This avenge a lost to Thornton Academy the last time the state meet was held at Windham in 2008 by 1 point. The Scots were led by triple jump winner Tyson Goodale who posted a team high 21.5 individual points. On the girls side the lady Scots avenged a loss to Scarborough at the indoor state meet by turning the tables on the Red Storm. Bonny Eagle entered the final relay ahead by 6, and ran very well to finish right behind Scarborough to seal the state title win by 4 points. Leading the way was the Dostie twins who scored 42 individual points together not including relay points. It was a record breaking day on the girls side as 5 new state meet records were set. Keila Grigware (Biddeford) broke the record in the javelin throwing 131-10. Maria Curit (Biddeford) broke a 22 year old record in the long jump with her 18-1 3/4, the mark is just off the All-time state best. Scarborough sprinter Nicole Kirk rolled to a new record in the 200m 25.49, holding off a strong effort from Peyton Dostie, who was also under the old record with her 25.60. Dostie did get a record though in the 300m hurdles where she ran 44.67, taking down Jesse Labreck's 4 year old record. The final record was broken in the 4x100, where the Scarborough team of Morgan Rodway, Emilia Scheemaker, Andrea Tolman, & Nicole Kirk broke the 50 seconds barrier running 49.65. Boys Recap

For Bonny Eagle Coach Greg Wilkinson the 4x400 brought back memories of 3 years ago when the state meet came down to the relay, his Scots team losing out to Thornton Academy by 1 point. Wilkinson remembered that meet before the start of the finishing event, and had to go to the opposite side of the track because last time the home side of the track wasn't good to him. The Scots of Bonny Eagle wouldn't disappoint their coach as they finished off the meet with a 3rd place finish, which gave them 6 points, they only needed 3 for the win.

Bonny Eagle was led by sophomore Tyson Goodale & senior Joey Collins. Goodale won the triple jump in a great showdown with Edward Little's Connor Harris, both athletes jumped 43-11 1/2, going into the final jump Harris held the advantage with the 2nd best jump but Goodale had one jump left and he rose to the occasion jumping 43-7 which was good enough to edge out Harris. Goodale also added a 3rd in the long jump, was part of the 3rd place 4x100 & notched a 4th in the hurdles.  The senior Collins added runner-up finishes in the 200m & 400m, while also adding in a 6th in the 100m before anchoring the 4x400 to 3rd, the 200m was the most impressive race for Joey as he was seeded 10th coming into the meet, and had to run in the 3rd section without the top seeds. While Goodale & Collins were strong they had plenty of support. Junior Shane Corbett won the discus 139-0 & Jeremy Collins added a win the 300m hurdles 40.35, along with pair of runner-up finishes for senior Nate Martel in the shot put & senior Christian Malarsie racewalk.

Challenging the Scots all day was the Red Eddies of Edward Little who led by 2 points heading into the 4x400 relay, after earning 12 points in the 3200m led by a 2nd place finish by senior Hussein Mohamed. Sophomore jumping phenom Connor Harris led EL on the day winning the high jump state title, then adding in a 2nd in the triple jump & a 4th in the long jump for 22 points. Other standouts for EL were Keith Tremblay who won his 3rd straight racewalk title, as well as a 4th in the discus, senior Michael Lucas who won the 110m hurdles, Ricardo Hairston added a 3rd in the triple jump, & Darnell Hairston was good for a 3rd in the 110 hurdles. Head Coach Ryan Laroche was pleased with his team's effort, "We did just about everything we could have done, the kids had a great meet."

In the pole vault Mike Slovenski (Brunswick) repeated as champion clearing 13-6. Distance wise Jack Terwilliger won the "distance triple" 1600m, 800m & 3200m, Terwilliger easily won the 1600m by 10 seconds, in the 800m he got a bad start that had him in the bad of the pack, but he didn't panic and worked his way back to the front during the 2nd 100m, he would hold off Mitchell Black of Brunswick to win in 1:59.03. Jack finished his day off by taking the 3200m out fast, and then holding on to win by 5 seconds. South Portland's Adrian Reid had a good day, winning the 200m 22.89, 2nd in the 100m & anchored the winning 4x100 team.

Mt. Ararat's McKenzie Gary came into the meet as the top seed in the 200m & 400m, but Gary's meet was cut short after his last jump in the long jump when he felt a pop in the tendon behind his knee. Mckenzie would equal the winning jump but got beat out by Alex Shain (Sanford) who had a better 2nd jump.
