The SMAA Southwestern Maine Championship meet will take place outside of the expo for the first time on Saturday with the 81st running of the meet on the campus of the University of Southern Maine in Costello Athletic Complex starting at 9am with the opening ceremonies & national anthem. The field events will get underway at 9:20am, followed by the first final of the morning on the track the 4x800 relay at 9:45. Throughout the day 25 individual & relay champions will be crowned culuminating with the presentation of the individual award winners & team champion at the conclusion on the meet.
The meet will feature some of the top athletes in the state with state leaders Bryan White (Deering) Shot Put & Tony Sen (Deering) 55m Hurdles along with Class A leading Jackson McMann (Cheverus) 200m, Anthony Miller (Deering) 55m, & Alec James (Scarborough) pole vault.
The team title looks to be a dead heat with the top teams from the regular season, undefeated Scarborough who is the defending champion & the Gorham Rams who were 21-2 on the season, the only losses from Rams came at the hands of the Red Storm. Cheverus has an outside shot at making a title run as well. There are several events that Gorham & Scarborough will square off against eachother, and if the meet comes down to the relays it should make for an exciting finish as both teams have top quality squads, with the Rams ranked #1 in both.

Race of the day Open 600yd
This race is stacked, & that is probably an understatement. Top seed Brandon Cushman dropped an impressive 1:18.13 last time out. Scarborough's Mike Tudor was in that race getting dragged to a very quick 1:19.05. Gorham's Joe DeRoy is another threat with his sub 1:20 clocking of 1:19.61. The sleeper in the field may be James Campbell of Cheverus who has some very good 400m speed, and last time out ran easy through 400m before blitzing the last 150m of the race. The potential for all 6 scoring under 1:20 is a distinct possiblity.

Individuals to watch
Junior Division
Travis Grant (Gorham)- Grant comes in with the top 55m hurdle time of 8.25, which is a league record. He is also the top seed in Jr. long jump 19-0 3/4, along with the #3 seed in the Jr. triple jump (38-2 3/4). Additionally Grant will run on the top seeded Jr. relay team to conclude the meet.
Andrew Smith (Thornton)- Smith enters the meet with the top 55m time in the Jr. division with his state qualifying 6.98. He is the only jr sprinter under 7 seconds this season. Addtionally Smith is the top seed in the 200m dash 24.79. Both of his times are league records. Additionally Smith is the #3 seed in the long jump 18-3 1/2, & he'll also run on TA's junior relay squad.
Austin Bell (Gorham)- Bell is one of the top 400m runners in the state, his league record time of 52.68 is over 2 seconds faster than the #2 seed. Austin is also the #2 seed in the 200 (24.88) & will run on the top ranked jr. relay team
Cameron Langlois (Scarborough)- Langlois is the #2 ranked Jr. hurdler 8.34, and is coming off a win over the too ranked hurdler, he is also the #4 seed in the jr. high jump, the #6 seed in the long jump 17-5 3/4 & will run a leg on the #2 ranked jr. relay team
Duncan Preston (South Portland)- Preston enters the meet as the top ranked jr. triple jumper with his 38-9, additionally he is ranked #3 in the jr. shot put 41-9 1/2, most likely Preston will be on the Red Riots jr relay team as well
Senior Division
Tyson Goodale (Bonny Eagle) Goodale returns after missing the last 3 weeks due to a hamstring injury. He is the the #1 seed in the sr triple jump 43-6 1/2as wellas the top seed in the sr long jump 20-2. Tyson will also run in the 200m in the unseeded morning sections because he hasn't run the event all season, he could find himself on the podium with his talent, to close of the meet expect Goodale to anchor the #3 ranked sr. relay team
Ethan Beaulier (Noble) Beaulier is one of the top sprinters in the state, enters the championship with the #2 time in the 55m 6.78, as well as the #2 time in the 200m 23.54 just .01 outside of first. He'll also run on Noble sr. relay team
Bryan White (Deering) White is the seed in the shot put with a state leading 51-4 to his credit
Joe Slattery (Cheverus) Slattery one of the most verstaile athletes in the state enters the meet seeded #2 in the long jump 20-0 3/4, he is also ranked 3rd in the sr triple jump with a mark of 39-3. On the track Joe will take aim at the sr 400m where he comes in seeded #3 with a 53.25, and to close of the meet he'll run leadoff for the #2 ranked sr. relay team.
Open Events
Mike Tudor (Scarborough) Tudor is ranked #1 in the 800m running a season's best of 2:04.66, and will also run in the Open 600yd race where he is the #2 seed with his 1:19.05
Jesse Orach (Gorham) Orach enters the meet with the top seed in the 2 mile 10:09.06, he will also compete in the mile where he is the #3 seed 4:41.53. And don't be surprised to see Jesse run a leg on the Rams 4x800 relay
Wout Moulin (Scarborough) Moulin's return to the indoor oval has been a succesful one, Wout enters the meet with the top seed in the Mile 4:34.32, and the #3 seed in the 2 mile 10:14.89, also look for him on the top seeded 4x800 squad
