Conference Championship Week: WMC Preview

WMC Championship Preview

Meet Page

Last year heavy rains forced the Western Maine Conference (WMC) to move its championship from Falmouth Community Park to St Joesph' College. The change in venue proved to be a popular one as the meet is back at St. Joe's this Friday. The meet has some of the top individuals & teams in the state. On the boys side the meet features the following ranked teams. #2 Falmouth, #3 Cape Elizabeth, #9 Fryeburg & #11 York.  On the girls side, #6 Falmouth, #9 Yarmouth & #10 Greely will square on in what should be a very close meet. The varsity races are run as one but will be scored as 2 seperate divisions.

Boys Division 1 Preview

Individually Greely's Nate Madeira is the favorite, Madeira who placed 3rd a year ago is the top returner and has clocked the fastest time for 5k this year, 16:29. The dynamic duo of Liam Simpson & Peter Doane give Cape a strong 1-2 punch, both are capable at making a run at Madeira for the individual title. Others to watch are Bryce Murdick & Jay Lesser of Falmouth

The team race between Falmouth & Cape Elizabeth should be a hard fought battle as both team have quality and depth. Falmouth who defeated Cape at the Festival of Champions 2 weeks by 5 points can be considered the favorite as the Yachtsmen are the defending champions as well. Falmouth's #5 man gives them an edge in a close meet, Cape will have to run well at the front & have some improvement from their #5 man. York another ranked team could move up if the top 2 slip up.

Boys Division 2 Preview

Defending individual champion Silas Eastman of Fryeburg is the heavy favorite to repeat. Eastman should be pushed by Merriconeag's Jack Pierce who has run a best of 16:09 this season. Look for a much improved Braden Becker of Yarmouth to put in a strong effort. Others to watch are Logan Gerchman of Fryeburg, Matt Malcolm of NYA & Josh Espy of Waynflete all should contend for a top 5 finish.

Fryeburg Academy fields a strong team that currently has them ranked #9 in the latest polls. They were the D2 runner-up last year to NYA, but will be looking to be the top team this year. Based on 5k times this year Fryeburg is a heavy favorite. If any team is to challenge them it is Yarmouth.  It looks like 3rd place could be up in the air with NYA, Waynflete & Merriconeag all coming in seeded at 91 points.

Girls Division 1 Preview

The duo of Kirstin Sandreuter & Eva Bates of Greely are two of favorites for the individual title in DIV1. Sandreuter has edged Bates the previous 2 meets but anything can happen in a championship setting, either way the Rangers will be well represented at the front of the pack. Falmouth's Madeline Roberts would have been in the mix, but she may not run due to an injury. Others to watch for are Geneva Waite of Falmouth, the defending champion Kristina Smith of Poland & Heather Evans of York who all should contend for a top 5 spot

Greely is coming off a big win last week over Falmouth, Yarmouth & Cape, they'll look to carry that momentmum over this week. It's really wide open, if Roberts can run for the Yachtsmen, the top 3-4 spots are up for grabs. Greely has the best 1-2, while Falmouth counters with a tight pack, Yarmouth has 3 strong runners at the front, and Cape needs to run their varsity 5 for the first time this season to be in the mix. Expect a close race decided by 1-2 spots in the end.

Girls Division 2 Preview

The D2 race looks to be a good one with Sarah Becker (Yarmouth), Hannah Austin (NYA), Caitlin Teare (Yarmouth) & Martha Veroneau (Waynflete) all contending for the top spot. Becker as the most individual wins on the season. Austin has been getting better each week, while Teare was the top runner for the Clippers in last week's meet at Twin Brook. Veroneau has the experience. With no cleat cut favorite the race promises to be a good one.

Teamwise Yarmouth is the clear cut favorite, the Clippers are ranked #9 in the latest polls, and are coming off a strong performance last week. Merriconeag & Waynflete look to be the next best teams, the two class c powers will get a preview off what is to come during the next few weeks as the go head to head.
