Class B Girls State Meet Preview

(A Special to MaineTrackXC from Tim Even)

The Class B Girls meet promises to give Maine track fans quite a show at McMann Field in Bath. This meet will have two of Maine’s all-time leaders, who represent dominance in 7 different events. One of those ladies is Bethanie Brown, who is ranked first in the 800,1600, and 3200. She will attempt that triple, which she has successfully completed many times before, to try and lead her team to a 7th straight state title. She is also listed on Watervilles Class B leading 4x400 roster. This will be Brown’s final state meet, capping off an outstanding 4 year career for the Purple Panthers of Waterville which has seen her set the all time best in the mile (4:51.54), 3200m (10:13.9h), 1600m (4:50.39) and 5000m (17:11.14). The other person to watch is Lake Region’s Kate Hall. Kate is the all time leader in the 100m (11.68) 200m (24.96) and the long jump (18’5) all marks that she reached this season. Kate will compete in those 3 events this Saturday along with Class B’s leading 4x100m relay as she looks to lead her team in what promises to be a close runner up battle.

Other stud athletes to watch include the Class B record holder Hermon’s Kaitlin Saulter in the 400m who will go for her second 400m state title in 3 years, Old Town’s Tia Jackson who holds the top seed in the high jump and top 5 seeds in the 100m and 200m, Greely’s Gwen Sawyer became Greely’s 2nd ever 40 foot shot putter last weekend at WMC’s and is the state leader in that event and the 2nd seed in the discus, Sawyers teammate Kirstin Sandreuter has impressive seeds of 5:14 and 10:34 in the 1600m and 3200m, and Ellsworth’s Aleta Looker who sports a 5:19 and 2:18 seed in the 1600m and 800m. Looker offers to be a legitimate challenger to Brown in the 800m, being one of the few Mainers to have notched a win against her in the past few years after running her down in February at the State meet in the 800m, and in March at New England’s in the 1000m. Keep your eye on that race when those two toe the line on Saturday.

The team title race looks to be much of what we have seen the past few years…a lot of Waterville. Aside from Brown, Waterville has some other very talented athletes ranked high up on the totem pole. Kellie Bolduc holds the top seeds in the 100m hurdles, 300mhurdles and the triple jump, Georgia Bolduc who has the top seed in the pole vault, and is also seeded to score in the 200m and 100m, and Lydia Roy and Sarah Shoulta also offer Waterville top 5 finishes in 3-4 events a piece. The Purple Panthers have scored no less than 145 points at an outdoor meet in the past 3 years and promise to put up another big number by the end of the day on Saturday. At first glance Lake Region, Old Town, York and Greely look to be the teams to go at it for the runner up position. All in all it promises to be a outstanding, record setting day of Track and Field at the Class B Meet.
