Salute to Seniors: Lucas Bourget (Edward Little HS)

Lucas Bourget- Edward Little HS

What was your most memorable races? My most memorable races have to be my worst run races. I've had many let downs when the race counts, but they serve as most memorable due to their importance. These races are most important because after analysis, you begin to understand more about yourself as a runner, and which areas you need to work on.

Out of all of your high school accomplishments, which stands out the most? It's difficult to pin point a single moment where I've felt most accomplished. I'd have to say, the greatest accomplishment as a runner is being able to look at your training, racing collectively and determine that you've improved. You don't have to be a champion on day 1. However, each step forward is a victory within itself. So the fact that my times have not remained idle stands out to me greatest.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school? I feel I've learned a tremendous amount about the sport of running. I've fallen in love with it, and created a bond that I'll never be able to break. However, the one thing I would change, is running cross country and indoor track (or xc skiing) as a freshmen. Later start in the game than I should have.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome? The most difficult obstacle I've had to face every serious distance runner has faced, or will face at some point. And that is the fact that defeat, and failure is inevitable, but not permanent. Success comes from rises after falls. I've several let downs as a runner, and it's always difficult to stay optimistic after an embarrassing race. But the hardest obstacle is to be patient and wait for that rise, because it will always come, as long as the love, and the work goes into the running.

What will you miss the most? I think in time, I'll miss my community and school where my running all began. But I'll always remember the memories made, so it's not going to be that bad though.

What advice you would give to younger athletes? Younger athletes; Don't let someone tell you your goals/dreams are unrealistic or unattainable. If you believe deep down you can achieve them, it is a must to attack those goals each and every day. Every day you're granted 86,400 seconds that are promised. Those seconds are yours, and nothing can take them away from you. The only thing that's going to waste those seconds is you. Success, and reaching a goal takes time, a long time. But you've been allotted much more than you think. Work your ass off. Don't be afraid of discomfort. No great in all of history will tell you their glory came easy, no way. Set your sights, disregard negativity towards what you believe is true, and never look back.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals? My senior year is my coaches 30th year coaching at EL. I'm incredibly fortunate to have such experience, passion, and love behind my running. Coach Campbell has moved me miles (literally). He has changed my life forever, and has opened my eyes to many new thoughts and ideas. Not just towards running, but of compassion, selflessness, and the gift of giving back. I love my coach like a father, and I'm blessed to have such influence, and guidance as a young man.

What are your college plans? Next year I'll be attending UMO! Nice recruiting class, lots of talent and familiar faces. Can't wait to run at the next level.

Who would you like to say thank you to? I'd like to say thank you to my many inspirations. Rusty Snow, Campbell,( Geohegan, Cullenburg, Cassidy, Fontaine, Kaake)(These guys tore up the track, and gave me motivation to look up towards. Moninda, Pontbriand, Robbie Hollis, past team mates. Barre, Tracy, Hall, Shafer, Holts, Wood, Ross, Harris, Wheely, Moh, and any other guys I've raced. All Maine coaches, and all Maine officials, incredible job officiating, and coaching. Couldn't have had such memories without all of you. And lastly thank you to my haters, who put me down and told me I won't, cant, and any other nonsense you decided to tell me. It provided much of the fuel I needed to get out and train everyday to prove you wrong. I'll continue to do so until my legs give, and heart stops. Thank you everyone! Work hard, run harder!
