Defending champion Dan Curts of Ellsworth ran with the pack at the mile which was covered in 5:10, with fellow Mainers Josef Holt-Andrews, Ben Decker & Braden Becker all within a few strides of eachother as they headed to hills.
It was on the second big hill near the chair lifts that Curts & Holt-Andrews pulled away from the pack to battle over the mile plus of the race. The two seniors who have visions of chasing a Footlocker bid in late November showed they have the form to challenge anyone in NE. As the duo came down off the trails onto pavement they were stride for stride with about 1k to go. Holt-Andrews surged to lead on the pavement, and led Curts down the big incline. This was reminiscent of last years year that Curts had with Silas Eastman, where Eastman led Curts until the final 500m, it was a repeat this year as Curts took over the lead before the final switchback up to the finish line. The only question would be if he could get the course record of 15:17. He pushed hard to the line recording 15:23, good for #2 AT in meet history, Holt-Andrews fought to the line clocking #4 AT, 15:27. The duo had nothing but compliments for eacother after the race.
It would be a 35 seconds before Harwood, VT's Sam Nishi would finish in 3rd, behind him was a pair of Yarmouth Clipper teammates. Ben Decker, fresh off a big soccer game with Cape last night showed no ill effects as he clocked, 16:07, while teammate Braden Becker was 5th in 16:21.
Ellsworth senior Brayden Beardsley had a strong run as he finished 15th overall (16:59) with a sub 17 for the time in his career. The next Mainer across the line was Robert Looker in 22nd with a 17:11.
Teamwise East Greenwich, RI took the win with 54 points to 66 for Harwood, VT. Ellsworth was the top Maine team in 3rd with 111, while Greely got on the podium with a 5th place effort

Greely's Kirstin Sandreuter came into the race with the goal of crossing the finish line first. Sandreuter accomplished her goal although she had to deal with a small heal injury that popped up this week. Running in a close pack throughout the early parts of the race was Sandreuter, Carmen Bango (Woodstock, VT), Aleta Looker the defending small school champion, & Anne McKee of Kents Hill.
Sandreuter would gain some seperation in the back hills, and had enough in the tank to pull away from Bango over the final mile. Kirstin's winning time was 18:59, a little off what she had hoped for but a sweet victory nonetheless. Bango would finish 14 seconds later, with Looker closing well to finish thirs (19:23). Sophomore Anne McKee who competes for Kents Hill had a strong effort as she challenged so of Maine's best in route to a 4th place finish, 19:31.
Hannah Austin of NYA had a strong performance as she finished 9th overall, clocking a 20:15. Kristina Smith of Greely was next across the finish line in 17th with a strong 20:47.
Greely earned a podium finish with a strong race that saw the scoring 5 all under 22:03, the Rangers efforts earned them a runner-up team finish. Marshwood was 10th while Ellsworth finished 12th

Boys Elite
The #1 ranked Cape Elizabeth Capers competed against some of the top competiton in New England in the Boys Elite Race at Manchester Invitational. The Elite race was won by Bishop Hendricken senior Colin Tierney (15:38) who pulled away from Darien, CT's Alex Ostberg (15:40) over the final home stretch.
Cape Elizabeth was paced by senior Liam Simpson's personal best of 16:13, good for 9th overall. Simpson who ran with the race leaders early on even took the lead shortly after the mile but the early pace caught up to him midway through the race, but he was able to push through for a strong effort. Fellow classmate Peter Doane had his breakout race of the season as he finished 18th overall with a 14 second personal best clocking of 16:35. Doane who had been running #4 for the Capers in the early season meets has dropped 17 pounds since the beginning of pre-season, and is rounding into shape.
Rounding out the scoring for Cape was Will Britton (42nd 17:07), Kyle Kennedy (45th-17:09) & Mitch Morris (46th-17:09). Britton who missed a couple days this week with illness was clearly not at 100% but he gutted is way through. The pack time of 56 seconds is a good sign for Cape with Simpson running well at the front, and the 3-4-5 guys having an average day.
Darien, CT took the team win with 78 points edging defending champion Bishop Hendricken (84) by just 6 points. South Burlington (105) was 3rd, with Pinkerton Academy, NH (143) in 4th with Cape Elizabeth geting the final podium spot with 156 for 5th.
