Girls Highlights

Westbrook scored a big win for the program with a convincing 201-151 win over Bonny Eagle. According to the Blue Blazes coach Tim Even this was the programs first SMAA win since 1995. Leading the way for Westbrook was sprinting standout Brittany Arsenault who picked up a win in the senior 200m (28.65) & a second place in the senior 55m (7.77), both marks qualify for the state meet.

Bonny Eagle's Audrey Weyand was a double winner as well, Weyand took the Sr 55m (7.73), and added a win in the SR 400m (63.30). But disatser struck in the Sprint medley relay when Weyand went down with an apparent hamstring injury.

Distance ace Mary Szatkowski of Bonny Eagle had a pair of wins, taking the mile in 5:37.91, then coming back with a 12:07.12 in the 2 mile.

Another Scot Kaleigh Marston was the victor in the 600yd (1:37.89) then doubled back succesfully in the jr 800m (2:29.31)

 

Boys Highlights

The Noble Knights took the team win as they tallied 126 to outdistance the runner-up Westbrook who has 85. Biddeford scored 77 while Bonny Eagle had 68. The Knights were strong in the relays with wins in the Jr 4x200, Sprint Medley, & 4x800m, and had a lot of quality depth on the sprints.

Biddeford star James Ociti was on top of his game adding 3 individual wins on the day. The senior started with a win in the long jump where he got out to 19-5 1/4. He then took the Sr. 55m in 6.96 followed by another W in the Sr. 200m (24.24)

Justin Gagnon of Biddeford also added added 3 wins as well. Gagnon clocked a state leading 8.19 in the 55m hurdles, he added a win in the Sr. high jump with a 5-2 clearance, he finished his day off with a 38-7 1/2 effort in the triple jump

 

SMAA: Cheverus, Gorham, TA & Windham

Girls Highlights

Thornton Academy took the team win with 168 as they held off a strong effort from Windham (140). Cheverus showed plenty fo talent in 3rd (79), while Marshwood had 68, with Gorham rounding out the team scores with 62.

Leading the way for the Trojans was Tori Daigle who had a pair of wins. Daigle scored her first in the long jump with a leap of 16-1 3/4, she also sprinted her way to a win in the Sr. 200m (27.87), along with a 2nd place finish in the Sr. 55m hurdles (9.53).

Also providing a pair of wins was Alexandra Pettaway for TA, Pettaway is competing indoor for the first time this winter. She show great speed in the 55m with a blazing fast 7.68 for the win, she also added a W in the SR. triple jump 31-11 1/2

 

Boys Highlights

Thornton Academy showed it will be a team to watch for in the 2013-14 season as the Trojans opened with an impressive team performance. They tallied 193.5 points, Gorham edged Windham 115 to 113.5 for second, while Cheverus was back in 4th with 107. Rounding out the scoring team was Marshwood with 8.

TA's Andrew Smith put on a show in his first meet of the season. The junior ran a state leading 6.82 in the 55m dash, added another state leader in the long jump with a huge 21-1 leap, then raced to a 3rd win in the Sr. 200m, 23.73

Gorham's Jon Gray clocked a fast 800m, 2:04.79 for an easy win, the mark is a state leading performance.

Cheverus's Jacob Schott had a personal best and state leading jump of 6-2 in the high jump, he added a 8.51 runner-up finish in the Sr. 55m hurdles

 

SMAA: Deering, Massabesic, Portland South Portland & Scarborough

Girls Highlights

South Portland held off a strong challenge from Deering for the team win. The Red Riots had 157.5 on the scoreboard to the Rams 151. Scarborough was in 3rd with 135.5 with Massabesic in 4th 68, & Portland in 5th with 20.

South Portland was led by three wins from sprinter Lauren Magnuson who won the Sr. 55m (7.94) & Sr. 200m (28.32), plus a 13-6 1/2 jump for victory in the long jump. They also got a state leading 2 Mile performance from Shannon Conley as she covered the 16 lap event in 11:52.57

Deering got a pair of wins from mid-distance standout Edie Pallozzi in the 600yd (1:37.57) & Sr. 800m (2:30.04). They had help from Rashad Zagon as well who won the Sr. 55m hurdles in 9.90, then added a 5-0 clearance for a win in the high jump

Scarborough's Aly Atherton was a standout in the junior division where she won the 400m (64.57) & 200m (29.48)

Boys Highlights

Scarborough continued it's long unbeaten regular season streak that now spans 4+ season with an opening day win. The Red Storm have won the SMAA title in 4 straight seasons scored 252 points in the week 1, South Portland was second place with 149, Deering was 3rd with 86 while Portland has 30 in 4th & Massabesic was 5th with 20 points.

Scarboorugh had 14 individuals punch their ticket to the state meet in meet #1. They got state leading performances from Mike Pino in the Sr. Shot (49-6), Colin Tardiff in the mile (4:41.1), Jacob Terry in the 2 mile (10:15.71), & freshman Sam Rusak in the pole vault (11-6)

Deering got a big day out of Virgina transfer Hany Ramadan who showed the SMAA he's one of the best sprinters in the state. Ramadan showed good form in the 400m where he pulled away over the last 100m for a state leading 52.16, he followed that up with another state leading run in the Sr. 200m (23.68)

Additionally Ricardo Delgado had a strong day for the Rams as he won the high jump with a 6-0 clearance, then added a strong 20-7 1/2 leap for another W in the long jump

South Portland's Michael Cuesta showed he's a title threat in the triple jump this winter as he unleashed a personal best & state leading 42-7 1/2 jump.
