KVAC Indoor Track & Field Championship Meet Preview

This will be the first indoor KVAC Championhsip in 2 years as the 2013 editiion was canceled due to weather. In Class B Waterville looks to be a lock to continue it's team dominance, while in Class A boys Messalonskee is looking to win its first ever KVAC title, and good battle is shaping up on the girls side between Brunswick & Messalonskee.

 

Class A Boys

This should be a tightly contested team race with Messalonskee looking for its first KVAC title while perennial power Edward Little is looking to get back on top. Expect a tight meet throughout with these two teams, Lewiston which has been hit hard by eligibility loses this winter still projects to be third. Brunswick & Mt Ararat should battle for a top 5 spot.

If Messalonskee is going to win they will need distance runner Logan Moses to come up big. Moses is seeded for 24 points, and entered in all three distance disclipines. He the second seed in the mile, 800m, and 2 mile. The other key cog in the wheel for the Eagles is Soren Donisvitch who is expected to tally 23 points, he is the top seeded triple jumper,  second best long jumper, and will compete in the pole vault as well. Depth make play a key role in the success of Messalonskee as well they have 12 athletes seeded to score.

Edward Little is seeded to only have 6 individual athletes score, but they have quality at the top along with some decent relays. New sprint sensation Hunter Martin has come out of nowhere this winter to be the top seed in the 55m, 200m & 400m, in fact Martin has the top 55m mark in the entire state. Fellow sprinter Trey Rogers has also emerged, he is the second seed in the 55m & 400m plus third seed in the 200m. Jumper Brad Morisette will need to come up big as well, he is seeded for 16.33 points, his best event is probably the triple where he is the second seed (40-9)

For the Blue Devils of Lewiston, distance runner Osman Dorrow is the top seed in the mile & 2 mile.

Mt Ararat is led by the top seed in the pole Andrew McCracken (12-6), he is also the second seed in the hurdles.

Skowhegan's Jacob Coombs is an athlete to watch, he is the top seeded hurdler and a strong long jumper.

 

 

Class A Girls

This looks to be another tight meet with Brunswick entering the meet with a 14 point lead based on the seeds over Messalonskee. The Eagles will hope to keep the special season going with an upset. Both squads have plenty of talent so it should be an enjoyable one to watch. Lewiston looks to be the third best team with Skowhegan and Edward Little rounding out the top 5.

The Dragons of Brunswick with rely heavily on seniors Teresa Murphy & Anna Cowman plus sophomore Tiffany Tanner. Murphy is seeded for 26 points, she is top seed in the mile & 2 mile, and the third best in the 800m. Tired legs will have to be ignored for Brunswick to win.

Cowan provides verstality, she is the top seed in the 800, second seed in the 400m, and will run in the 800m. Tanner will be a strong back up to Murphy in the distance races, she is the top seed in the 800m and will run both the mile & 2 mile.

Messalonskee is led by the top sprinter in Class A this winter, Amanda Knight. Knight is top seed in the 55m (7.53), 200m (27.07), 400m (61.12). With a long layoff between meets Amanda should have fresh legs, and attack some even faster times as she looks to guide her team to the title. The other key for the Eagles is Taylor Lenentine who is seeded for 24 points. Lenentine is the top seed in the pole vault & 55m hurdles, plus fourth seeded in the triple jump.

Other standouts in the meet to watch for are Heather Kendall of Lewiston who is the second seed in the 55m, and third seeed in the 200m, plus will run on the strong 4x200. Maddy Price of Skowhegan is seeded for 18 points, she the second seed in the 200m & the triple jump. Edward Little's Makayla Norcross is a top competitior for the Red Eddies, she is the top seed in the triple jump and a strong hurdler.

 

 

Class B Boys

Waterville the defending champion is the only team seeded to score over a hundred points, the Panthers are expected to tally 142 1/2 points. Belfast with 76 & Erskine 41.5 are the nest best teams with Maine Central Institute, Oceanside & Morse all contending for a top 5 spot.

Leading the way for the Waterville is a pair of seniors Jordhan Levine & Troy Gurski. Levine is the top seed in three events (Triple Jump, 400m, 55m Hurdles) and looks to score the maximum thirty points allowed for an individual. Gurski is slated for 26 points on the day, holding down the top seed in the long jump, plus he's behind Levine in the 55m hurdles, and also second fastest in the 200m. The duo could combine for 56 points which is more than every other school besides Belfast is seeded to score.

Waterville will also count of distance star Chris Cote who is the top seed in the 2 mile, 10:00, and the second seed in the mile.

For Belfast they are led by sophomore Drew Nealey who is seeded for 23 points. Nealey leads the pole vault field with a 13-0 clearance this winter, the next closest to him is a 9-6 jump. Nealey is tied for the lead in the high jump, and fourth seed in the triple jump. His teammate junior Owen Falvey is another big name in the meet. Falvey is tied for first in the high jump, third seed in the triple jump & long jumps.

Others to watch are Camden Hills Ben Trapani who is the top seed in the mile & 800m. Maine Central's Shane Hathaway is seeded to score twent points, he is the second seed in the triple jump(40-10) & long jump (19-3.5). Preston Spear of Oceanside is the top short sprinter in the meet, he holds the top seeds in the 55m and the 200m.

 

Class B Girls

No surprise here, Waterville girls are expected to cruise to another conference title. The Panthers are the gold standard in the KVAC, and Class B, and based on seeds may win by close to a 100 points. The Waterville powerhouse is led by a pair of juniors Sarah Shoulta & Kellie Bolduc who are expected to score over 20 points each. In fact 8 Waterville athletes are seeded to score more than 10 points which shows great quality and depth.

Shoulta is the top 55m hurdlers, pole vaulter, and third seed in the 400m, while Bolduc is has the top triple jump distance in the state this year, is right behind her teammate in the hurdles, and is also a pretty good high jumper having cleared 4-10. Lydia Roy leads the sprint crew this winter, she's the second seed in the 200m & 400m, while freshman Cecilia Morin leads the distance crew, she's the second seed in both the mile & 2 mile.

Belfast is primed for a runner-up finish, while Camden Hills, Erskine and Winslow look to be the next best.

Other athletes to watch for are Cassidy Hill of Belfast who is the top overall sprinter in the meet, she's the top seed in the 200m (27.04) & 400m  (61.23). Camden Hills Melissa Kessel will be busy, she running both the 55m where she the top seed and the 55m hurdles where she fourth seed, along with being the third seed in the 200m. Her teammate Brittany Bpwman leads the distance runners in the meet, Bowman is the top seed in the mile & 2 mile.

Jade Canak of Erskine Academy is one of the top all-around track athletes in the state. Canak is the top seed in the long jump and the second seed in the triple jump along with being the third best hurdler. Medomak Valley's Amanda Young is seeded for 16 points, she the second seed in the 55m and long jump.
