Thornton Academy girls & Scarborough boys reign supreme in SMAA

The Thornton Academy girls entered the meet as the favorites to win the team title, and the Trojans didn't disappoint as they got a 1-2-3 finish in the girls senior long jump to start the meet and never looked back.

Senior Tori Daigle had a strong day to help lead TA to the win, she won the long jump with a 16-5 1/2 jump, then took the 55m hurdles in 8.85, before running a seasonal best and Class A #4 mark of 27.26 in the 200m. She also ran a leg of the senior 4x200m relay that placed second. Another key contributor to the win was junior Alexandra Pettaway who had a season best 34-5 1/2 in the triple jump for the win, a runner-up finish in the senior 55m, 7.66 plus a third place finish in the senior long jump, to go along with a leg on the senior 4x200. Amanda Arnold also provided key points in three individual events, she was third in the senior 55m hurdles, runner-up in the long jump, plus a third place in the triple jump along with a strong senior relay leg

Other winners for Thornton were Olivia Libby in the junior triple jump 32-3 3/4, Kaeleigh Harrison in the senior shot put 35-5 1/2 which was a seasonal best.

Bonny Eagle's Kialeigh Marston had a big day for the Bonny Eagle Scots are the sophomore won the mile in a seasonal best 5:21.19, came back in the next event the junior 400m to finish third, 64.32, then ran the next event the junior 800m to score another win in 2:31.92. Not to mention she started the day off with a leg on the winning 4x800m relay.

Meredith Willard of Cheverus was a standout, as the senior won the senior 55m dash in a seasonal best 7.58 then added another win in the senior 200m, 27.17. The 7.58 moves Willard to #2 in Class A, and the 200m mark is good for #3 in Class A.

Kiera Murray of Cheverus ran a Class A leading 11:24.95 in the 2 mile to easily win the event.

              The Scarborough Red Storm boys continued their dominance over the SMAA as they cruised to the conference championship for the 5th year in a row. Scarborough got contributions across all three divisions, plus won all 4 relays.

Leading the way was freshman Sam Rusak's 24.5 points, Rusak who won the junior high jump with a 5-10 clearance, and was third in long jump & pole vault, and then ran the anchor leg on the winning jr 4x200m relay. Distance runner Jacob Terry helped the cause with a pair of second place finishes in the mile & 2 mile, he missed winning the mile by just .03.

Other standouts for Scarborough were junior Hugh McSorley who won the shot put with a throw of 49-0 1/4. Sophomore Griffin Madden was victorious in the Jr 55m hurdles as he ran a season's best 8.31. Colin Jones was the top 600 yard runner as he ran 1:17.09 for the win, and he also anchored the winning sprint medley relay team with a strong 800m leg. Junior Edward James cleared a personal best 12-0 for the win in the pole vault, his brother Alec was the champion a year ago.

Biddeford's Justin Gagnon was on his game in the 55m hurdles, in the trials he ran a state leading 7.90 seconds which bettered the league record of 7.96. In the final it was a great race between Gagnon and Isaac Yeboah of Cheverus as both ran under the 7.90 mark, with Gagnon edging Yeboah 7.84 to 7.86. Those are the two fastest times in the state this winter.

Junior Jake Dixon of Cheverus was also a record breaker, Dixon escliped the 23.13 record set last year by Noble's Ethan Beaulier as he crossed the line in 23.10. Teammate Isaac Yeboah was close behind running 23.26 the second fastest time in the state this year.

South Portland showed its dominance in the jumps, as the Red Riots went 1-2-3 in the senior long jump & senior triple jump, which provided 48 important points for the third place South Portland. In the long jump standout Duncan Preston popped off a state leading 21-6 1/2 to lead the way, Michael Cuesta had a big personal best 20-3 1/2 to finish second place, and Ben Michaud was third with the same distance 20-3 1/2. In the triple jump Ben Michaud got the win as he had a personal best 42-4 3/4, Preston was second 41-11 3/4 & Cuesta 41-11 1/2 was third.

Biddeford's James Ociti was a double winner on the day, he won the senior 55m dash in 6.76, then won the senior 400m in 51.00, holding off the challenge of Jake Dixon by .09.

Alex Arnold of Thornton Academy was a double winner in the junior division long & triple jump. Arnold recorded marks of 19-1 & 37-8.

Windham's Eric Webb had a pair of wins, taking the junior 55m in a personal best 6.96 to edge TA's Dan Marsh by .01. Webb also won the junior 200m in a personal best 24.14, again holding off Marsh this time by .03.
