HS Bloggers: Heather Evans Blog #6

Follow York senior Heather Evans as she blogs about her outdoor track season. Evans is a distance runner who runs the 800-2mile. She has personal best of 5:21.48 in the mile, 2:33.47 in the 800 & 11:42.25 for 2 miles. A year ago Heather placed 3rd in the indoor mile, & runner-up in the 2 mile at the Class B state meet this winter.

The sun is shining, birds are chirping, and the snow is melting at an incredible rate! Spring has arrived, which signifies the beginning of my final track season at YHS!

With warmer temperatures, training has become much more rewarding. I have been training quite rigorously the past few weeks, because I have a full rest week in my sights. 'A rest week?' You may be wondering... Since it's odd to have a rest week so early in the season. But over April break, I will be taking off to the pacific coast of Costa Rica with my Spanish class to embark on an outward bound trip! We will be camping out in the rainforest, white water rafting, surfing, repelling down waterfalls, and backpacking to and from every location! I am beyond excited for this trip, it will be an amazing experience. Though while in the jungle, it will be hard to squeeze in any running, which I think is a blessing in disguise. I have a small nagging pain in my left adductor, but I'm sure that a full week of resting my running muscles will heal any brewing injuries!

Looking back on my running journals from last outdoor season, I have some goals that I set for myself after a sub-par State meet. Last season wasn't a great one for me, and I promised myself that my senior year would make up for it. So I have listed some goals that will keep me motivated throughout this season!

  • To break my school mile record, which is a 5:17. I have had this record on my agenda since sophomore year, so this year is my last chance to take it down! (Just 4 more seconds!!)

  • For our girls team to continue on the comeback trail and be Western Maine Champs! We have a lot of talent and good event coverage, so I think this could be the year that YGT gets back on track! (Literally... LOL)

  • To have fun! This will be my last season, and I want to make the most of it. I am determined to train as hard as I can, but keeping my teammates excited and motivated while still having fun is equally as important!

Giving yourself goals is a great way to start each season. They keep you motivated and force you to look at the bigger picture. Even if you have a rough patch, remembering what your goals are will always bring you back to reality. I recommend that you sit down and contemplate three things that you really want to get out of this season, write them down, and put them somewhere you will look everyday. (I keep mine on my mirror!) I hope everyone feels rested from the off season and is ready to get after it!

    Happy Training! ~Heather
