8:51.24! Curts shatters Maine all-time 3200m best at Loucks
A damp track certainly didn't hold back Dan Curts of Ellsworth. The Iowa State bound senior had one goal in mind when he toed the line, "break 9 minutes". Curts daid pre race that "I've been ready to break 9 for a while now".
The pace was hot right from the gun as Alex Ostberg (Darien, CT) took the pace out fast as the opening 800m was 2:12, Curts tucked in right behind Ostbeg letting the junior set the pace. The pace settled into 67's after a opening 64.5 lap, as the duo opened up a gap over the rest of field as they ran the first 4 laps in 4:27.67.
With 800m to go the chase pack was closing as the duo ran lap 6 in the slowest of the race (68.18) as they were preparing for the final kick. With 600m to go Curts went to front and injected the pace as lap 7th was covered in a 66.25, the second fastest of the race.
In the final 400m, Curts opened up his long powerful stride and was able to pull away for the victory with a last lap in 61.5 to close it out. His finishing time of 8:51.24 was a meet record breaking Chad Noelle's 8:56.02 from 2011. In the process Dan became the first Maine HS boy to break the 9 minute barrier, as he shattered former South Portland star Eric Giddings record of 9:00.70 from 2005 by over 9 seconds. The mark currently ranks Curts #4 in the US.
"It's been a mark that I've been looking at breaking for awhile now and to finally do it is just exciting. To be the first person to do it from Maine makes it that much sweeter", Curts commented after his race about breaking 9.
