Salute to Seniors: Brittany Bowman Camden Hills

What was your most memorable race/moment?

In cross country and track I have had many memorable races. In cross country I especially remember Eastern Maine Regionals my junior year at Belfast when it was extremely muddy and parts of the course had a couple inches of mud. Most people fell several times and were covered in mud. Although I ran a very bad race, it was a true cross country race full of grit and courage.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

Over the four years I have faced a lot of friendly competition. I especially enjoyed competing against other runners in my class because I have been running against them since freshman year and know many of them from Acadian Running Camp. The MDI team was competition for my team and I my sophomore and junior years and it was always fun to race against them at FOC, Regionals and States and become friends with them as well. Prior to these races my team and I are guilty of stalking and analyzing their meet results to try to know more about their racing style.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

One accomplishment I am proud of is qualifying and running at the New Englands cross country race all four years of high school, and placing in the top 25 both sophomore and junior years (17th sophomore year and 24th junior year). Another accomplishment I am proud of is winning the Class B State Championship my sophomore year. I struggled in the beginning of the season with confidence but overcame that when it mattered the most and won the state championship for my only win of the season.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

I wouldn't change much about my high school running career. I learned a lesson with each mistake I made. But sometimes I do wish I trained harder or less.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

The biggest obstacle I had to overcome was getting injured right after the cross country season my junior year. I was unable to run or cross train all of indoor track season and it took me a while to get back to the amount of training I was doing before I was injured. The hardest part was trying to get back into training. It was obvious I was a lot slower than before and mentally it was challenging to build my confidence back.

What will you miss the most?

I will miss my teams. I will miss the small and close indoor track team of six people. Everyday after school we drove fifteen minutes to Oceanside High School to train under their coach. I will miss training, racing, and running warmups and cooldowns with Abby Hersom after seven years through middle school and high school. I will also miss the large cross country and track teams and all the traditions such as running to the ocean or lake and swimming, all the team dinners and just being one big supportive family.

What advice you would give to younger athletes?

My advice is to form a valuable relationship with your coaches because they can be the most influential people in your running career.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

I always looked up to my coaches throughout high school. They have taught me to be passionate and never give up. Their enthusiasm and excitement for me when I do well encourages me to reach even higher goals.

What are your college plans?

I will be at Tufts University next year studying either engineering or premed and running cross country, indoor and outdoor track!

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I would like to say thank you to my parents for getting me interested in running in elementary school and their constant support no matter how I do in a race, my coaches, Becky, Helen, Mrs Mismash and Bartke for helping and inspiring me get to where I am now with running and providing me with the best running knowledge, and Abby Hersom and my teammates for helping me get through my toughest and most disappointing times with running and races.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Good luck to everyone this upcoming year! I can't wait to look at the results and continue to follow the Maine running community.
