Thoughts on Training and Racing

Follow North Yarmouth Academy senior Hannah Austin during her senior indoor season. Austin finished third in Class B 2 mile a year ago, and returns as one of the individual favorite to win 2 mile title this winter. While she is small in stature she certainly makes up for with her grit & determination.

Hi everyone!

I hope you all had a fun, relaxing, holiday break and that your indoor seasons have gotten off to a good start! It’s so exciting to see that there have already been some amazing performances even though it’s still early in the season!

Personally, my season has not started off quite how I wanted it to. During one of the first weeks of practice, I pulled a tendon in my hip when I was doing drills, and for a few days, it hurt to walk and bend my knee. After taking a few days off, I could run again, but was only able to do short runs at a very easy pace. I was unable to run at our first meet, the Bowdoin Relays. I was pretty sad about this because I have always enjoyed the unique, fun relays that the meet has. However, I still went to cheer on my team, and had fun warming up and cooling down with various members of my team, as well as some of my friends from other teams. This past week was when I really felt like I was finally all better, but aside from a short out and back run, I didn’t do any hard running so that I wouldn’t re-injure myself by coming back too soon. Luckily, I was able to race the 2mile this past Friday with no pain at my team’s first regular season meet. Because I haven’t been training as much as I would have without the injury, I didn’t feel very fast throughout the race, and I did not run the time that I was originally hoping for. However, considering that the race was the first time I’ve really run at a hard pace all season, I’m happy and excited for the upcoming meets, when I’ll finally have gotten some good training in!

One of my favorite things about track meets is watching my teammates and seeing how fast they run or how far they jump/throw. Many of my teammates did really well at this past meet, which was really exciting considering this is only our second meet of the season. We have a few state qualifying marks already, as well as a few people who were pretty close. The team also came in second at the meet, and was only a few points off of first, which was really cool! I am so excited to see how my team does as the season goes on!

I hope all of your seasons continue to go really well! I’ll see some of you on Friday for our next meet!
