Trever Gray 'I Used To Think Throwing Was Just A Big Guy Standing In A Circle Throwing A Ball'

Waterville junior Trever Gray started out as a sprinter and jumper in middle school. He'd glance over to the throws and think, "Throwing was just a big guy standing in a circle throwing a ball." Little did he know that he'd be one of those guys. Before one of his meets a coach put him in the shot put and he instantly fell in love with the sport and quickly learned there was much more to it.

"I came to learn the speed and technical work that is needed to be a successful thrower. It's much more than just strength."

As a freshman, Gray had a personal best in the discus just over 115 feet. As a sophomore, that number grew over 30 feet. This year, he's launched the implement 156'3", the third farthest of any Maine thrower. In the shot put, he's gone from 40 feet as a freshman, to 50 as a sophomore, and a personal best 56'9", the second best in Maine behind only South Portland's Daniel Guilani. He says the numbers are impressive, but the season isn't done yet.

"The season has been going well. I'm looking for that 60' in shot put and a 165+ in discus. The way training has been going I think its well within reach at Saturday at KVAC."

Gray is looking for his second straight KVAC Championship in both events. He attributes his improvement to both speed and strength.

"My coach is very educated when it comes to strength and conditioning, and has us on a very strict lifting schedule to help increase our numbers in the weight room and In the circle."

Coming off of a indoor state championship in the shot put, I think the weight has been lifted from my shoulders and the pressure to finally win one is gone, now I can use that moment as motivation to help bring home many more state titles.

Last season as the top seed coming into states in both shot and discus was mentally challenging for me. Indoor season is where I overcame the mental aspect of the sport.

It would be great to take home a discus and shot title this year, after falling short in outdoor last season.
