State titles up for grabs

Class C

The Orono boys are 30 plus point favorites entering the meet and will be looking to improve on their runner-up finish from a season ago. The Red Riots will be led by sophomore thrower Jake Koffman who is the top seed in the discus (162-5), plus seeded #3 in the shot put & #4 in javelin. Tristan Butterfield is another top gun for Orono as he leads the 800m field with his sub 2 clocking of 1:59.56.

Foxcroft Academy will be looking for some hardware and if they are to do so look for Judson Smith to be the main reason. Smith is the defending high jump champion, comes in seeded #2. He is the top seed in the 300m hurdles (40.88), plus #2 in the 110m hurdles and #3 in the long jump.

Traip Academy's Evan Porter will be one to watch he is the top seed in the 110m hurdles (15.76) & 100m (11.28), plus the #2 seed in the 300m hurdles.

Oak Hill's Drew Gamage will be looking for a pair of state titles, Gamage is the top seed in the triple jump by six feet (46-7) as well as the top high jumper with a 6-4 clearance.

MCI's Eric Hathaway is the defending champion in both the discus and javelin. He's the top seed in the javelin (165-10), with last year's Class A champion Cole Bulter (Limestone/MSSM) looking to make it two in a row. Hathaway is the #2 seed in the discus.

In the shot put Yarmouth's Darren Shi the defending state champion will hope the home circle is good to him as he is seeded almost 3 feet behind top seed Curtis McLeod (MCI).

Speaking of Yarmouth, freshman distance runner Luke Laverdiere is the top seed in the 1600m (4:31.57) & 3200m (9:59.26), he will be pushed by Fort Kent senior Matt Toussaint.

On the girls side Orono is a virtual lock to make it 4 state titles in a row as they have one of the best teams in the state regardless of class affiliation. The Red Riots on paper are seeded for 136 points while Seacoast figures to be the next best at 51.

Individually for Orono Lauren Stoops will rack up the points, she is the top seed in three events, 100m (12.71) , 200m (26.36) & 300m hurdles (46.74). She is the defending champion in the 100 & 200.

Distance runner Hannah Steelman is the top seed in the 1600m for Orono, she is also the #2 seed in the 3200m while vaulter Allison Pickering & teammate Samantha Round are the top two seeds jumping 9-3 & 8-6 respectively.

Orono also has the top ranked 4x800 & 4x400 teams. Their seed time in the 4x400 (4;07.41) would shatter the Class C state meet record by over two seconds.

Seacoast will be pace by Kylene DeSmith who is the top seed in the 100m hurdles (15.50) and the only one in the field under 16 seconds this season. DeSmith is also the defending champion in the triple jump where she is also the top seed with a best of 35-8. She is also the #2 seed in the long jump.

Mattanawcook sophomore Tia Tardy will be looking to repeat in the 800m, she has her eyes not only on the class c meet record of 2:18.24 but the all-time state best mark of 2:11.31. She has clocked the third fastest 800m in the state this spring, 2:14.24. Tardy is also the top seed in the 3200.

Defending 400m champion Elora McCuddy of Traip Academy is back to defend her title, McCuddy is the only one in the field with a sub 60 effort this spring.
