Salute to Seniors: Maddy Doyle Marshwood HS

Name: Maddy Doyle

School: Marshwood High School

What was your most memorable race?

My most memorable race was the Indoor New England Championships this year. I qualified with my relay team, and even though we didn’t place, we set a school record. It was a really proud moment for all of us.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years? It’s definitely hard to answer that question, as a lot of my best (and favorite, Anna Slager...) competitors are underclassmen. But I think I would have to say Gabby Johnson: the Massabesic girls I frequently race--Angel, Emily, and Gabby--are all amazing people, and amazing runners. Sometimes it felt like I was a Massabesic girl, and not just when I was mistaken for one in every newspaper.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

I think that my running career has been an accomplishment. I started out as an awkward, scrawny kid who didn’t really know how to run. Now I’m an awkward (but not scrawny) runner.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

I would get rid of the cat hat.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

I had an injury during my senior year indoor season, and was unable to train. In the end, the real obstacle was returning to running and rediscovering my love for the sport. The injury was slow to recover, but my mental game was worse.

What will you miss the most?

I will miss all of the amazing athletes and coaches I met. Not only do I have very close friends on the team and a coach I cannot even begin to thank: I have the nicest, most supportive competition. We always wished each other luck, and had fun after the races. Also, I will never forget how good it felt to hear other coaches, like Westbrook’s Tim Even, cheer me on.

What advice you would give to younger athletes?

I think that every athlete has to overcome some obstacle, and it easy to lose sight of the reasons that you run. The most important thing is to remain passionate and not give up.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

Coach Sanzone has been everything: I would not be the athlete or the person I am today without his guidance. He helped me become more confident and mature, and supported me through every success and every obstacle.

What are your college plans?

I will be attending Clark University.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

My other coach, Vinciguerra: we didn’t get to work together outside of cross country (I can’t sprint or jump), but I owe a lot to him. In my freshman year, I didn’t know who to pace with, so he told me to pace with whoever was in front of me. That advice always stuck with me.
