In her own words: Anna Slager opens season at Laliberte

Today Gorham competed in the Laliberte meet at Cony in Augusta. There was a varsity and a JV race, both co-ed. I had run this race before through the USATF, so I knew the course. It begins on a gradual downhill and then (after a short loop) slowly winds its way up an interminable hill. I was excited about a co-ed race and running against teams that weren't in Gorham's conference, but much less excited about the hills.

The hills, however, were not an issue for my teammates. Many Gorham runners proved this with stellar performances. Anthony Chase, Tyler Bernier, and Carlos Monsen, all placed in the top ten for boys in the JV race. Grace Libby also did well with a 2rd place finish in the JV race for girls. In the varsity race Jesse Southard placed 4th, running against some very tough competition. I came in 5th. I had been struggling with hip issues all week but felt fine during the race. As a team Gorham placed 5th. Overall, it was a very well-organized and well-marked course, and a good change in scenery and pace before the real season gets underway.
