In his own words: John Hassett - Don't dream of winning, train for it

Hello! My name is John Hassett and I am going blogger for this fall's Cross Country season. I am going to be a junior this year at George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill Maine. Becoming a junior in High School is sort of a funny feeling, knowing that you are more than half way done with your time in high school but still have a long way to go before gradation. Running wise, however, this is the year that you have to do your best and that there is no more time to goof off on workouts. It is not like freshman year where you are still figuring out what it is all about. I sure hope you can bear with my blogging and I hope to see all of you out on the course.

My first exposure to running was in the 4th Grade when I had to run the mile. Of course, winning a race like that sounded like to coolest thing to everyone in the class. Up until that point running to me wasn't even considered a sport. But when I got up on the starting line with my spider man light up sneakers, I knew that this was something that I was going to want to do when I was older. After the mile in school the only other racing that was available was the Fourth of July 5k, and like most runners I have never forgotten that first race. I guess that's where it all began.

To be perfectly honest there haven't been any goals set for this year. It would be great to make Footlockers or Nike Cross but it feels better to do your best than to have to be the best. That statement is probably the most fulfilling part of running.

So, this summer's training has been focused on that motto. However, there is one other motto that I follow as well. It is a quote from Mo Farah "Don't dream of winning, train for it".
