Salute to Seniors: Daniel Guiliani (South Portland, HS)

Name: Daniel Guiliani

School: South Portland High School

What was your most memorable meet?

My most memorable meet would have to be states sophomore year in the shot put. I'd consider it my break through day. I was seeded fourth, and sixth going into the final, then I pop a 55+ foot throw, and I get excited then walk out the front. But I won with my 5th throw at 53-6. It not only showed me I had potential in this sport, but it also showed me that I can be poised during competition. That is still my favorite day for track to this day.

What would you consider your biggest competition over the last four years?

Over the last four years, I never really had a crazy amount of competition in the shot put. Discus on the other hand, a few stick out. State wide, Jake Koffman, but I haven't really competed with him much. Austin Lufkin would be one as he beat me in the discus this year, but we never really competed over the years either (Though this year in states we had a great competition) . I'd say my greatest competition was my junior year with Nick white. We always went back and fourth, and it was fun competing with him.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

I would say my greatest accomplishment overall was breaking the seventy foot barrier in the shot put. Only a select group of high school boys have reached that distance in the history of the sport, and it feels amazing to be part of it.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

I would've tried harder freshmen year and I would've just done the spin all four years instead of using the glide technique freshman and sophomore year.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to over come?

Definitely getting injured this winter of senior year. It was very hard to miss out on all but one meet but I was happy the outdoor season made up for it.

What will you miss the most?

My team. I had such a great time with my teammates and coaches over the last four years. We were so close and we had a nice balance of working hard and having fun. It was a blessing to throw at South Portland.

What advice would you give to younger athletes?

Never stop chasing your goals or any dreams that you have. Don't try to set goals way to realistic. Come up with a plan on how you're going to achieve a goal, and don't ever stop until you get there.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

My coach has had a huge influence on my life. Without his push and support, I wouldn't be the athlete I am today. Im very blessed to have had Coach Kahill be my coach, and I'm truly going to miss being coached by him.

What are your college plans?

I will be attending Iowa State University, Majoring in journalism and mass communication, and I'll be competing on the track team on a full scholarship.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I would like to thank My parents for all their support and love, My coaches for my overall development as an athlete, and to my teammates for making these last four years so memorable.
