Salute to Seniors - Billy Chambers (Waterville HS)

Name: Billy (Mad Dogg) Chambers

School:  Waterville Senior High School

What was your most memorable race?

KVAC Championship Racewalk 2015. Spencer Dunn, Sam Brenner, and I went head to head in the most heated race for first that I have ever been in. Even though Spencer was class A we still fought like he was in our race!

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

My biggest competitor for the Race walk over the for year I would have to say Spencer Dunn. together we have had some pretty amazing times and races. For my running Ricky Smith has been close to me in almost every event including the 5k in cross country. Indoor Kvac championship you see Ricky and I out kicking each other in the Mile ( I took it) and the 800m (He got that one).

What was your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment during high school would be Indoor Nationals 2016 where I took 5th place to become All American. Another one would have to be Cross Country Kvac Championship where us boys were the first team from Waterville to win it sense 1975.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

If I could do one thing over it would be to get more miles in over the summer. Going into cross country season with very few miles is very hard if you want to do well early season and I didn't realize that till senior year.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

The most Difficult obstacle that I had to over come was my flat feet that made me suffer shin splits very often throughout my four years.

What will you miss the most?

The part that I will miss most is the family like atmosphere that the sport of running provides. I have made some really good friend though this sport and that even though we are competition, We still will cheer each other on and cheer eachother up after a bad race.

What advice you would give to younger athletes?

Never give up. Yes that sounds super cheesy but its the way of life, once you give up you lost and that to me is the only way to lose. If you end up getting last in your first race oh well! To me that a win that you were out there and gave it your all!

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

My coach Rob Stanton has influenced and helped me learn quite a bit over the last four year years but the one thing Ill never forget is That nothing is ever handed to you but everything is reachable. He has shown me that If i truly wanted something like a personal best in a race I have to go do the work to hit that time not just expect it to happen. I feel like that will get me to wherever I want to go in life.

What are your college plans?

I'm attending Thomas College and will be running on there Cross country team.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I would like to thank My coaches throughout the years and everyone that has help build this running community to where it is today. It has truly been the greatest part of my high school experience and I can't thank you all enough!

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

I know I'm alone when I say this but Twin Brooks is my favorite cross country course... PAIN CAVE ALL THE WAY!
