In her own words: Katherine Leggat-Barr Plenty of time til October

Hey guys!

I hope you all had amazing summers and have transitioned smoothly back into school. Although the return to routine is probably positive for all of us, there is nothing like the feeling of dread that comes the last few days of vacation!

I had a very relaxing summer, with lots of time spent with friends and family, lots of summer homework, and lots of running! :) My summer training started off very slowly, as I was injured with peroneal tendonitis from rolling my ankle in lacrosse. It was frustrating as I had taken most of the spring off from running because of lacrosse, but hopefully I'll be fresh at the end of the cross country season!

Being a high energy individual, one of the highlights of my summer was the weekend of Beach to Beacon. I had been at a running camp the week before with my teammate Carolyn, and we had a race the last day of camp.I pushed the pace a bit harder that I should have, considering I had two races to go, and then ran the Beach to Beacon mile and 10k the following two days. It was a long stretch of racing, but very rewarding, especially because I got to hang out with so many great people. (Special shoutout to all of the girls who competed in the mile and gave it such a positive atmosphere!)

As I close, I want to relay one message that I shared with my team the first week of preseason. Unlike soccer or other team sports, that pick their team after a few days of tryouts, cross country is a sport where the varsity team isn't picked until the very last weeks of the season. You have 10 weeks to prove yourself through your races and training. Just because summer training didn't go as well as you might have hoped, or there are individuals who are faster than you right now, it doesn't mean that you won't be able to break onto that varsity team by the end of the season. Focus on what you can do to fulfill the goal you set for yourself at the beginning of the season, whether it be to finish every race, to make your JV or Varsity team, or even to place at States. There IS still enough time to achieve your goals, and they will become a reality if you believe they can happen!

Happy running,

- Katherine
